my wife works for king soopers, which is a horrible company to work for i might add, and they are possibly going on strike next week (should know for sure tonight), now if they do i am thinking of going on vacation from work and protesting the greedy union fucks. i cant believe these asshats have the balls to go on strike for better benefits and such when so many people are suffering job loss and personal SHTF scenario's.
anyone have any sign ideas :)
How about something along the lines of unions being the answer to a 200 year old problem...or something like that.
was thinking along the lines of unions have a strangle hold over America and my family wont be able to eat when they go on strike.

My wife also works for Kroger (King Soopers). For 25 years now. She is a journeyman meat cutter. So she should get fired because she wants to keep her pension that she has worked so hard for for 25 years and wants to keep her benefits?
And you guys have got it all wrong.
The union is a good thing. The major corporations keep fucking over the little guy, and the union is the only way to stand together. Or perhaps you all would like to be minimum wage workers? Hmmmm......It's called standing up for yourself and others and doing what is right.
Julie has been at the top of the pay scale for years now. But she only makes about $4.00 an hour more than when she started 25 years ago. And without the union, there is no pension or benefits. And new hires would be at minimum wage.
Kroger is one of the largest corporations in the world. They can afford good wages. And benefits. The only way this is accomplished is through the union. Without it, the rich get richer and the rest of us get poorer, plain and simple.
But I am in agreement with one thing-the union pres. (Ernest Duran) is a piece of shit. He has steered UFCW 7 into the ground.
And for you unenlightened folks-the union has nothing to do with communism. I fail to see the connection. It's about getting paid a good wage for good work.
Now what's really fucked up is that Kroger is going to pay the scabs more than they pay their own employees right now. And if you get hired to protest, you get around $10.00 an hour-but union people only get $225.00 per week. It's a big mess, for sure.

there is always the lawsuit...if you have the money to pay the lawyers...if you have the time to go to court, AND if you have the evidence.
It is a hard time right now. they should be grateful for a job. They can work with the company and say...alright cut our 401K match until we show stock value as $XX.XX (I own kroger stock and yes it has taken a hit but it is not horrible) Once the stock comes back... then the match goes back in, the pensions can get paid into etc. etc.
If the company closes the store your wife works at, it won't do you much good will it ;)
Sorry Tristan, we just have to disagree, IMHO, unions only hold you back. They encourage you to demand MORE for the same if not less work. Pension and Benefits are nothing more than YOUR money that being managed and spent by the corporation for you. I'd rather manage my own money and destiny -- that's probably why I would never go back to the corporate world ever.
I have seen too many peers who wanted that false union security blanket, that they never moved on or exploit their best ability in the 'real' world.

then you look at honda...who just so happens to be building a plant right here in the good ole United States of America (Baton rouge, LA I believe) and they are having a tough time with the economy but they aren't getting BILLIONS from the .gov or going into bankruptcy. know why? they pay their workers about 33% less (still good money to live on) and they keep the jobs in the US. take a look at your new american vehicle. roughly 80% of the parts are from canada and mexico. they may get assembled in the US (maybe). a lot of the parts, suppliers, and now the plants are going out of the country...so our US vehicles are no longer US...not supporting the US economy
take a step back and see what the damn union has really done for your wife. 25 years and she gets a $4 an hour raise... I would hunt for a new job when the time comes and just be happy I have a job at this point.
Tristan - I only agree with you in principle.
In reality, unions are destroying American commerce just as badly as senior level management (the ones who get all of the major bonuses and golden parachutes from companies that are failing). Sadly, the regular Union employees (ALL Unions) pay their dues over and over and get little in return. Union leadership will ensure that their jobs are secure, and their salaries are way above that of those union employees that they are supposed to represent and protect. The only reason Unions strike these days is to protect the income of the union leadership, not that of the low level union member.
****ETA (Edit to add): Once upon a time the unions had a place. they stopped most of the unsafe workcenter practices that were getting many employees severely injured or killed. The unions helped get the national minimum wage established so no employee could be worked for slave wages. The unions got child work laws passed as well as employee rights laws (couldn't be worked more than X hours total, no more than X hours without a food or restroom break, etc. That was a very long time ago though! ****
How are the members of the UAW being helped by the union when they are paid well above what their limited task realistically deserves. When the leadership of Chevrolet and Dodge requested that the UAW allow pay cuts to keep plants open the UAW said unequivocally NO. The UAW leadership would lose money if they allowed that to happen. They would rather allow the plants to close, putting most of the employees out of work (the unions only keep the union stweards and up employed) than to accept a compromise of a short term pay cut of the employees. Sure, the unions provide some level of pay, benefit, and workcenter safety protections to the workers, but at what cost?
This happens over and over in every union I've ever studied. Of course, as I stated before, senior level management in all of these companies seldom feel the pain either. These people continue to see pay raises, bonuses, and for the highest level of management, golden parachutes.
The only folks who take it coming and going are those in mid-level management and the "exempt" non-union employees. These folks have NO protection and are the first to be laid off or take pay cuts.
Once again, just my $.02.

Oh, I'm 100% with you guys on the union leadership thing. They're pieces of shit, like I said earlier. I have a few scenarios in mind for them,. lol......
But I definitely have a problem with what is going on. My wife has earned her pension and her pay and her benefits. Now they are trying to take them away. That's just wrong. And the union is, at the present time, the only thing keeping them from doing that.
Unfortunately, most people are so uninformed, like the original poster. The union people don't want more-they what what they have and what was taken from them in the last contract negotiation. They are not asking "for more". I used to be in UFCW 7. Ugh. I'd like to poke Duran in the eye.
Anyways, it's like this country-the leadership is all fucked up, plain and simple. But noone should lose their job because their boss is an idiot.
And as far as pension, fuck all that you said earlier. Again, my wife has earned it, it is in writing and now they want to take it away. It is hers. That, imo, is stealing. But that would be good for new hires, I suppose.
Yeah, I've told her over and over again to look for another job. But she is more "man" than most here. She stays and fights because it's the right thing to do. It's called honor and integrity with her.
Alas, I think it's becoming stupidity, though. The union has been slowly phased out over the years, since the big strike in 98. It's just a matter of time.

Regardless, there are indians and there are chiefs. It's what balances the economy. But that still doesn't mean that the indians should work for minimum wage for a multi-billion dollar corporation. Blah. I could go on. The whole thing is all fubared.

doc releases her and says she can return to work in 5 weeks, management says they cannot put her on the schedule for 8 weeks. so 8 weeks unpaid, shit got bad here for a while. she goes back to work and the mother fuckers wont let her pump breast milk to feed my premature child.
all this time the union has been zero help, and to end it all the cock suckers sent her some hate mail demanding she pay back union dues for the 8 weeks she was out of work.
fuck the union and fuck dillon enterprises.
I am a union man, won't even think of working for my company without one. I understand some of you guys who don't like them but sometimes they are necessary. We don't stand around and do nothing, we work our asses off and most of you couldn't do what I go through. My union keeps my company walking a straight line. The union representing Kings and Safeway (and Albertson's) suck a huge donkey cock. Duran is scumbag, worse then some of the corprick leaders. My dad was a union steward for them, they gave him a temp business agent job until an opening came up. When one did, they gave the job to Duran's son. Fuck the guy who worked for them for all those years. A punk ass kid who dedicated NOTHING to others got the nice lucrative job. My dad was out their holding picket signs for Kings and Safeway workers, even though he worked for Albertson's.
So I couldn't care less if this union was broken and taken over by a different union. I just feel bad for my friends that work for the grocery stores.
Oh and this same union said sorry, no money in it for us when they were asked by pizza delivery drivers if they wanted to work with the drivers to get things fixed. But you can damn well bet if the drivers unionized themselves, they'd be right there to then take it over. the work would have already been done, only thing left would be to negotiate a little bit and take them union dues.
Reasonable unions have a purpose, crappy unions like this one and the teachers union need to die.
