I understand that Crimea/Ukraine isn't NATO. The point was that NATO was formed to prevent oppressive leaders from trying to take over other countries and come to their aid.

Non-NATO countries can request NATO protection if they offered it.
Right next door you have Poland, Romania, Hungary and Slovakia which are all NATO countries.
I bet the next thing we start seeing is peace treaties in neighboring countries with Russia around the Ukraine. Similar things were done at the beginning of WWII and then they attacked them too.
We all know that nobody breaks Peace Treaties... Right?
They can request it, but they aren't guaranteed protection. NATO is an organization of nations that agree to help other member countries in times of need.

The recent news in the U.S. has reported that the U.S. Armed Forces are drawing down to pre-WWII levels, and the polls reflect the same sense of isolationism from the things happening in Europe that was prevalent in America in 1936-1940. I am not saying that there is an impending genocide going on in Europe, but there is a major conflict brewing and we again find ourselves turning a blind eye to the events just hoping to stay out of any conflict.
