House explodes in Thornton, blast heard for miles

Thornton Fire and Police are on the scene of a house explosion Thursday afternoon near West 131st Avenue and Monroe Drive.
The fire department said on Twitter at 3:30 p.m. that it was searching and evaluating exposed structures. The incident happened near Cottonwood Lakes Boulevard.
One person was unaccounted for.
Neighbors reported on social media that the explosion could be heard for miles and a television helicopter reported that debris from the exploded house could be seen on nearby rooftops.
There was no immediate word on injuries.
This is a developing story and will be updated.

I was outside and heard it, I am about 5 miles north. Not much left of it.

I heard the house explode in Castle Rock a while back. I think it was about a year ago? Quite the boom.

Probably another natural gas incident?

We weren't home at the time, but the house is about two miles from me. My wife was riding her bike this evening and was stopped just off of the Heritage Trail south of the house that exploded. She didn't know why the area was police taped, but now we do. Thanks for sharing the story.

Seems like a lot of houses suffering catastrophes like that lately up north. The plane fell on that house, and then there was that gas explosion last year.

Probably just makes up for the fact that we never get hail or tornadoes. Or rain for that matter.

Hash oil extraction doesn't blow up the house, just makes crispy critters of the stoners inside.

The ones using butane to extract have been blowing themselves up quite regularly for the last year or so. Apparently flammable gas plus lack of concentration plus confined space plus ignition source is a bad combination. Alcohol extraction is safer (and leads to a higher quality product, so I'm told), but is MUCH more expensive and takes more time.
