Most gun shops will accept a trade, if the deal is good enough. Just don't expect to get top dollar for your trade, and be reasonable with what you're asking. What are you trying to trade in?

Thanks for the reply. I'm considering trading in my Sig P938, with two 7 round mags and three 6 round mags. It has been my carry rig for the past two years, so there is some wear on the finish of the night sights.

I figured that trading in wouldn't bring me top dollar, but I haven't sold anything since the new gun laws took effect last year to a private party. Maybe I'll just post it here first and see what happens. I just wasn't sure about dealing with the extra steps now.

I would guess you will get at least a hundred dollars less by trading it in as opposed to selling it outright.

Selling a firearm to another party and using an FFL to do the background check isn't that big of a deal. It is going to limit your potential buyers as some people out there wear their tin foil hats a bit too tightly and some would still prefer an old school, face to face transaction. I'd definitely try selling it outright to a private party before I'd practically give it away to a dealer on trade.

You would defiantly make more money trying to sell it out right (legally) than you would get trading it to a FFL. Of course you could always consign it and make a bit more cash than trading it also. I know Ark Tactical does both.

I wouldn't do a consignment sale. Seems most of the ass hats that do consignment charge 20%. So selling a pistol for $750 on consignment is going to put $600 in your pocket and $150 in the FFLs pocket. For what? Putting it on his shelf and processing the 4473? No thanks. You could move that same piece quickly for $650 to a private party, cover the cost of that persons transfer for them, and still come out ahead.

Sounds good. Glad to hear that ithe is not as much of a hassle as I thought it would be selling it vs. trading to an FFL.

The actual transaction for a private party sale is pretty quick and easy. You just meet the other party at the FFL, the buyer fills out the standard 4473, once approved the seller transfers possession of his firearm to the FFL and the FFL transfers the item to the buyer. At some point during all of this you would obviously get your money from the buyer and one of you would pay the FFL once the transaction is complete.

DO NOT do a trade in. Sell it out right. I have a .300 weatherby that I was going to trade. I took it to two different shops to get it appraised, and both appraised it at $1700. One shop told me they would give me $950 and the other shop told me $1050. Sell it out right, you'll be better off.

Did a deal about two weeks ago for a P938 with similar extras. More than satisfied and paid a fair price. Didn't make the TP but was a forum member.

I'd say start here and see what happens. Shops need to keep the lights on and charging a commission helps them. 20% is a steel.

Used guns are where a shop can really make a buck. The profit margins on new hardware are pretty slim typically and it is not uncommon for a shop to net 50-100% markup on a used item.
If you want to pull the most you can from your item, private sale is where it's gonna happen.

Shops usually stick it in your butt as far as fair offers go.
