Hey everyone,
I am sort of new to long distance/precision shooting. I recently purchased a used Remington 700 in .308. The rifle came with a Wyatt's Outdoors detachable magazine. I would also like to use the rifle for hunting so I am looking for a 4 round mag for it. Is it worth it or do I need to buy the parts to switch the rifle back to the internal magazine only. I would like to keep the detachable mag set up, I really like it. Some guidance please.

This is the only thing I could find in the big game regs:
If semiautomatic, a maximum of six rounds are allowed in the magazine
and chamber combined.
I thought you could only have 5 in a bolt gun, but I don't see anything regarding it. Cant you just buy a 5 round mag for the Wyatt system?
I can buy the 5 round magazine and own one, but like you, I was under the impression I could only have 5 total rounds (4 in mag and one in chamber).Quote:

Yep. Only restriction is on semi autos. Bolt guns can have more rounds in the gun. Even then... The reg is clear that a 5 round magazine is allowed.

Where does it say that a illuminated reticle is not allowed? I have used scopes with illuminated reticles for years.
This is the entire section on centerfire rifles. You should be good with your scope.
1. CenTeRfIRe RIfles
a. Must be minimum of .24 caliber (6 mm).
b. Must have a minimum 16-inch barrel and be at least 26 inches long.
c. If semiautomatic, a maximum of six rounds are allowed in the magazine
and chamber combined.
d. Must use expanding bullets that weigh minimum 70 grains for deer,
pronghorn and bear, 85 grains for elk and moose, and have an impact
energy (at 100 yards) of 1,000-ft. pounds as rated by manufacturer.
e. It is illegal to hunt game birds, small-game mammals or furbearers with a
centerfire rifle larger than .23 caliber during regular rifle deer and elk sea-sons west of I-25, without an unfilled deer or elk license for the season. Asmall-game, furbearer or unfilled big-game license is required.

After re-reading some of the other regulations I am starting to think the guy teaching my hunter's ed class didn't know a whole lot. I am reading about giving game away and the restrictions and he was way off on all that, even going as far to say a large amount of processed meat in your freezer could be probable cause for DOW to search it and cite you (which of course I didn't believe), but lots of crappy guidance on the instructor's part.
I use Trijicon scopes on a few of my hunting rifles and they are legal, so you shouldn't have any issues with your scope. I also have an extended box on a Creedmoor that I use antelope hunting. It holds six or seven in the mag box, when I called DOW, I was told that it was fine as it wasn't semi-auto and wasn't a detachable mag. You may want to give them a call to verify.
Reading the regs is better than calling to ask. He is fine. No where do the regs prohibit detachable mags.
you are correct that detachable mags are not prohibited, and I wasn't saying that they where. What I'm trying to say is that detachable mags like the Badger ordinance and ones similar are generally found on semi-auto rifles not bolt guns so a higher capacity detachable mag could be a grey area if you were to get approached by the wrong guy. Yes the regs specify semi-auto, but that was also wrote before the surge of the more modern tactical style rifles being used today. We all know that laws and regs can always be interpreted in different ways by different people, so would hurt to error on the side of caution and call and talk to somebody.Quote:

I just don't trust calling any more. Is rather read the regs, and be able to pull them out and show a game warden exactly what they say rather than tell him that someone at the Broadway office on the phone said it was OK.
