Got a 27" tv that's gotta go.
I can pay to recycle, but I'm wondering if there a place to get it done for nothing.

Do you have a Best Buy near you? If so, they will take old TV's up to 32" for recycling at no charge to you (http://www.bestbuy.com/site/global-p...at149900050025).

Lucky it is just a 27" I finally found a place to take my 36" for cheap but I had a few places want big $$ to get rid of it because of the landfill law a few years ago. Best buy would be my pick as well. I have a couple of 19-27" ones to get rid of.
I bundled several of my old tube TVs in with a big old clothes and surplus appliances donation to VVA. If you leave out enough, they take it all away, and have better connections than me for cheap or free disposal.
hammer plus trash bag ... put it in the bottom of the bin.
Tannerite and some open range... then you don't have to worry about the hammer part and you get some stressfree fun out of it!! Put in a trash bag and throw it out with the rest of the trash. What is this landfill law that is mentioned?
Best Buy.
The trash guys are looking for this stuff. They get fined if they dump the stuff.

Mark it $200 and set it on the curb, someone will steal it before morning.
If it still works put it on Craigslist for free. Last one I listed was gone in 20 minutes.
I just dropped one off at best buy. Great deal FREE.
Bulbs Plus off Platte in Colorado Springs recycles them for a small fee

Sad part is the tubes are probably worth some $$ to collectors of fine old equipment. Finding said collectors is the hard part.
I still remember pulling tubes, going to the electronics store, testing them and buying new ones. Ahh, the good ol days.

When I was trying to get rid of a 50" they wanted $80 at the dump. I had a friend visiting from NY that had a good idea...go to WM and wait for a truck to park with an Odumba sticker. They go in and come back to find they've won a 50" TV!!!
