Springfield XDs won't extract round

Hey guys, I did a quick search on this and saw that a forum existed from April of last year but didn't know if I should rehash the new thread that hasn't been commented on in like 9 months. I bought an XDs two days ago, and while handling it with some dummy rounds, one of the dummy rounds got caught in the chamber and I physically cannot rack the slide back to extract it. Lucky for me, it was a dummy and not a live round. I contacted Springfield this morning about the matter, but as it's a sunday, I probably won't hear back from them today. Who else has experienced this? AND Is there anything else that I can do that might get the round out of it?

Dummy rounds (especially aluminum ones) wear out. It is very possible that this issue is being caused by the dummy round's damaged rim.

I will venture to say that Springfield will ask you to test the pistol out with live ammo before sending it back.

These are brand new dummy rounds. Also, I cannot rack the slide back to get the dummy round out.

Bought new or used?

It's a brand new XDs. Only fired in the factory. I haven't even been able to shoot the damn thing!

Do you mean to say that the dummy round is sticking in the chamber and it won't let you rack the slide?

That's exactly what I'm saying. The slide appears to be "stuck" for lack of a better word.

Don't take this the wrong way, but try harder. I had a Keltec PF9 and that thing was so tight it was difficult to rack the slide as it was. The first time I put a snap cap in there I experienced the same thing and thought Ihad broken something. I never shot the gun enough to really break it in, but it did become easier to manipulate with snap caps, but not much. Good luck.

Hold on to slide with left hand. Take your right hand and slam it into the grip. Should jar it loose.

Thanks. However it physically feels like there is something blocking the slide from being able to retract.

I know it feels that way. That's exactly how mine felt as well. I got mad and ripped it open. That gun only cost me $200 though, so I understand you're more hesitant.

Drive it out with a dowel on a hard surface inserted in the muzzle end pull on the slide at the same time as you push down with the grip hand.

Great news, the slide is now free! I was able to fix the problem! I am kind of pissed that this happened with a new firearm, however. I am happy to have it taken care of.

I am glad that you were able to fix the issue.

Look in the chamber to make sure that there is nothing in there that may be the cause of this issue. I recently saw a new gun that was shipped with a piece of a brass case stuck in the chamber.

I see nothing at the moment, but believe me that this pistol is getting a thorough scrub down.

If your chamber is clear, you may want to do a "plunk" test with a few live cartridges before you reassemble your gun. It is also possible that this particular dummy round was manufactured out of spec.

I came here to post exactly this! I never knew to do this with my Kel-tec, but I wish that I had tried it while I still had it. With my Kel-tec, it would manually extract live rounds slightly easier than the snap caps, but it fired everything just fine. Honestly, it's probably just because it's a brand new gun and still pretty stiff.

This is the first time I've ever had this happen with a new pistol. Possibly because of the size and the strength of recoil spring? So I take it that I should probably only use dummy rounds after shooting it a bit first?

Yes, more or less. The bullet should drop all the way into the chamber without needing to be pushed down.

EDIT: Anyone who has shot with me in 2013 and remembers the matches where I would have to tap, rack, and bang at least once during each stage, this is the ammo I was using. Great for training malfunction drills. Not great for winning.
