Ok, great... no stupid belt, well designed case. Seems to edge out 7mm RUM., seems to be a great long range hunting cartridge... Makes me wonder about bullet construction and shots under 200 yards.
What's your opinion on this? I think it makes more sense than the 26 Nosler (not as stupid overbore). Still, it seems to be a hunting only niche.
Seems like yet another answer to a question nobody asked. To each their own, but I really don't see the need with 7RUM already out there, and its already stupidly overbore and barrel life is out the window.
Its probably great for hunting outside of 200, but without perfect bullet selection for range, inside of 200 will make med size game look like a prairie dog smoked with a 22-250.

Getting accurate ammo out of a hard kicker like it isn't gonna be easy. And by the time you get a load worked up and are comfortable shoot it at distance, your barrel is half way gone.
I would rather shoot a 280 Ackley or a regular old 284.
Yup, plenty of other options that are performers out there without the extremeness of this thing, same issue I find with 7RUM. With 7 WSM, 7 RM, 284, 280/280 Ackley, 7SAUM, 7STW, etc I see no reason to go there. Recoil vs weight of the rifle, and the fact that 90% of the people that are going to buy it won't shoot it past about 400 and probably can't hit reliably past 300, it's going to be one of those calibers that's all the rage for a couple years at best, and then fizzle.Quote:

How is this faster than a 7RUM and still fit in a long action, or does this require a custom length action? I know nothing about the previous Nosler 26 other than seeing an ad once.
Well, so far, the only one chambering this is Nosler. Per their website, they're using their normal long action. I suppose they could have just gone with a fatter powder column....
I'd dare to say apples to apples loads it's not faster, It's case is .260" shorter overall, Distance from base to shoulder is .221" shorter, and From base to neck is .232" shorter than the 7RUMQuote:

And even in Nosler's own published data, the 7RUM is pushing a 160 @3231 while the 28 Nosler is pushing it @3300. I'm willing to bet there's little to no difference in the real world between the two.
Again, an answer to a question nobody really asked, I have to really question the wisdom of the folks at Nosler for even going down this road. I kind of get it with the 26 because nobody else was doing something like that with the 6.5mm (which is nuts if you ask me) but the 28 is so close to the 7RUM, there's no point to it, it'd be like doing a 300 Nosler, or 338 Nosler based on the same case, there's no reason to with the 300 RUM, and 338 RUM and Lapua already there.
I know a guy that will probably build a rifle for this. Serious hunter, speed addict (his current favorite is the 270 WSM... used to be a 280 AI and 7 RUM guy)...
To each his own. It would be fun to hit steel at a mile with it, but at that point, why not shoot a .338 Lapua?
I'm sure there will be some that jump on it because of the new hotness factor, but those that actually bother to put the numbers on paper and look at it will realize it's not exactly ground breaking either.
If they really want to wring this cartridge or a 7RUM out, they should seriously be looking at a 31" barrel, At least then there's time for all that powder to do it's work beyond lighting the grass on fire hahaha.
Educate me. Why the worry about this (or other similar) cartridge tearing up a barrel? I remember many people had the same worry about the 26 when it was introduced last year. What particular characteristics make a cartridge increase barrel wear?Quote:

Bigger the powder column, the faster the throat will erode. That, and the "overbore" concept. The smaller the caliber bore, the quicker it will go...
A .25-06 will burn up well before a .30-06 even though the amount of powder is basically the same... .243 before .308, et cetera...

I would if I wuz them. Again, microniche marketing. SOME folk out there are a die hard fans of 7mm... and there will be a few in that camp that will just HAVE to get the king of 7mm's. They'll HAVE to.
Heck, they done run out of 30 cal cartridges to try.

I thought we saw an end to the nonsense at 7 STW (the only cartridge I know of named after a magazine... shooting times westerner), but perhaps Weatherby will become famous in the WTF were they thinking thread by doing a 7-378, or mayhap some wildcatter will neck down a 50BMG...
The most overbore I have played with was the 6-284. That was and still is a coyote slaying machine. A 95gn Ballistic Tip going the speed of heat does wonders.
It is going to be time for a barrel set back soon.
