Long Distance Move

Looks like I will be moving at the end of the month to Omaha for job relocation.

I have an allowance to help with moving costs and I don't want to deal with packing up my house so I will be hiring out this portion of the move.

The turn around time is pretty short (house needs to be packed up before the end of the month). I had a call out to Greabel moving as I had a good experience with them before, but they are booked into June. They gave me 2 references to try: 1 being Exodus and the 2nd is Buehler Mayflower.

Does anyone have any other moving company recommendations? They need to be able to pack up the house, store my stuff in a warehouse (maybe 2 months), and move it out to Omaha once I have a permanent location established.

Companies are EXPENSIVE!!!! They charge around $4,000-$5,000 for a 3 bed 2 bath home. I used a 26' Penske, car transport, and another small 12' trailer and spend only around $2200.


Greabel had good customer service, but the truck burned down and I lost $12,000 in house hold goods.

U-Pack is another company I looked into.

I did use Bailey twice and the service was good (Co to Ca and CA to CO) 4500$ each. Now, for the 3rd long distance move, I hired some movers to do the packing and load a uhaul, then hired (twice) day temps to unload the uhaul to 2 storage units, then again to empty the units and move the packed stuff in my house (we did the unpacking). Total with uhaul, gas, Unit rental for 90 days and movers/temp 2700$.

I've used them several times. Always paid for by work, so I know they were getting paid well and I'm glad I didn't have to pay $$$$.

Pack yourself. It is the best opportunity to get rid of junk and give stuff away. Every time we've moved has been the best chance of paring down the accumulated stuff that finds it's way into every crevice of the house. Movers will literally pack a garbage can loaded with garbage if you don't empty it first.

I know it is a relative thing, but Denver to Omaha....not my idea of a long distance move.[Coffee]

Lol. That's what I was thinking. Hell, that's one of my work commutes. Literally.

Sorry, I don't have any advice for the move. I prefer to move myself. Moved myself from south of Houston to here for probably about $500.

I have used Exodus for two separate moves (both local) with good results.

If you can manage the move in your own, do it.

I moved from CO to GA about 5 years ago. When we packed I got the opportunity to purge a lot of useless junk, as you load/pack it, ditched it via garage sale and trash. The relocation bonus covered the Penske truck, gas, storage and first/last months at the new place.

When moving back, the new job covered relocation. The movers showed up and packed EVERYTHING. Trash, all the food stuffs in the cabinet, and many things that belonged to the house in GA. We didn't get a chance to purge any crap, nor put stuff where it was supposed to be. Like my drill that was packed with bedroom stuff because I was finishing up a ceiling fan install as they showed up, not packed with garage stuff. I'm still finding stuff randomly packed in the "wrong" place, which sucks because I had to purchase new and just wrote it off to lost in the move.

After my move, 45 days of storage was included, I tried to extend it to 60 days, but the moving company wanted another $109/day to store. They also wouldn't deliver to another storage facility, only a physical address. Probably for the better as it forced us to buy a home, rather than rent.

The moving company also wouldn't touch toys (4wheelers, boats, lawn mower...), any chemicals (think about under your sink & laundry room) guns, and ammo. they fought us on the various gun related items... Mags and parts, but we eventually talked them into it. So we ended up renting a uhaul trailer anyway.

When we asked how much the pack and move would have cost us if we were paying, they rough quoted us $9-10k, when my taxes were done, they showed $18k~ish as the amount the company doled out.

After looking through things I've decided to go with the pack it yourself route to save some of the allowance they are giving me for the move. Will help with some other expenses as they come up and if I play my cards right there shouldn't be any tax implications.

I've got reservations with Uhaul and Penske at the moment just to cover my bases on if a truck and car trailer are hard to come by on moving day. Guess the housing market is not the only thing that is tied up at the moment.

House is currently on the market: 3 bed, 2 bath 1700 sq ft 2 car attached garage townhome with private fenced yard and stamped concrete patio. Listed at 235... In the 4 hours it was listed last night I had 8 people walk through and I had another 15 showings today. Should be interesting as the offers role in.

I think that's the best way to go, moving yourself. When we moved from Maryland to Colorado, we had our final PCS move paid for by Uncle Sam. I swear to god, I have NEVER been so busy, watching and correcting those slackjawed knuckledraggers as they "packed" our belongings. Their idea of packing was: put together a box, stick tape on the seam, shove a sheet of paper into it, pull out kitchen drawer, upend kitchen drawer into box, cover with another sheet of paper, seal box.

I know there are decent movers out there. But it's so much better to pare down, carefully pack/wrap your things, knowing where they are and knowing which boxes of stuff go where at your new home.

Cowboy Moving & Storage in Englewood. Super nice people and locally owned. I have storage there and see them all the time...

Just an update on this and a PSA:

Car haulers from Penske and Uhaul will not accept vehicles with tires larger than 28". Uhaul will sell you extensions, but they cannot guarantee a truck/trailer for you on the day you reserve, and Penske can. I run 33s on my Tacoma (yes I could have gotten a set of rollers that would work but I didn't want an extra set of tires around after the move) so I had to cancel the car hauler and fly a family member out to help with the move. Car hauler was ~200 and the flights were 260, so not much of a loss there but I will have to pay for gas on two vehicles now. Luckily it's only 540ish miles to Omaha. It will also be nice to have an extra set of hands when I unload everything.

All said and done, this move by myself will be right around $2000 including storage fees for a couple months, gas, boxes, family flight, truck rental, food...etc. Definitely the way to go as I've gotten rid of a lot of junk and will come out ahead with the allowance I was given from my new company.

Good to hear. Sorry about the Car hauler.

something to consider for next time - pull your drive shaft and do just the dolly. You can drop your trucks rear drive shaft pretty easy, and just get a Car dolly. Yes it's more work/time, but in a pinch, it's do-able.

Awesome news with my long distance move: the house isn't ready yet because the seller screwed up, so all of our HHG had to go in temporary storage. Sweet. :(
