I just bought a 67 camaro. I have great speakers I planned on putting in my other car, but I want them in my camaro. They are high end Focal's. I need a reccomendation for a head unit. I AM NOT putting it in the dash. I am after a great modern day system, but hidden away somewhere with remote control of one sort or another. Don't care if it's Ipod, droid, remote....whatever. I just want it to sound great.
If you're after phone integration, Alpine is your best bet for sound quality and ease of use. Pick a budget and features you want. I've done stereo installs for years, and alpine has been my go to for the past 5+ years. And Focal's are great speakers, but really need to be driven by an amp for best performance.

Glovebox mount is the most stealthy, most decent head units come with a remote control. There is a couple under dash mounts as well.
I agree on the need for an amp. I'd stick with a decent digital amp for the footprint. Nice and small.
alpine decks are pretty good, and I didn't have to replace many due to failure that wasn't customer induced. I Personally liked kenwood, but things may have changed since they are owned by JVC now.
The best advice I can give is to know your installer, not salesman, salesman are based on spiffs and what they like, or the company is pushing. Installers generally know their own abilities and what fails... Or doesn't.
Still no picture. The GTO has its original stuff. The TA has an old shaft mount.
They do make replacement head units that look OEM for the 2 shaft single DIN GM Products, as well as OEM wiring harnesses to keep from cutting your harness. While you can hide it in your glove box, it may just be easier to put the original unit in storage and find a unit that looks and fits the original hole, while giving you an auxiliary or Bluetooth input for a phone/MP3 player. If you go with the glove box, I would buy an aftermarket replacement liner to reinforce and cut-up for cooling and to run wires - in order to preserve the original one.
If you decide what you want to do, I would be willing to help. I have cases of connectors, fuses and lots of wire, from 0/1 to 22 gauge from my old car stereo days. I also have some equipment that could help. I agree that you will need an AMP for pretty much any Focal Speaker.
If you are looking to just do a new head unit (new or replacement) and 2 amped rear speakers, that should be easy enough after you get your equipment together. Do you have/want front door or dash speakers?
I have put 2,000 watt JL Audio system, with dual batteries & an generator in my old Chevy Avalanche, torn out the interior of a 2 week old FJ cruiser and have been building systems since the mid 1970s. I have sort of given up on my fanaticism with stereo as my hearing and body have started to fail.

Here is a reasonably priced basic unit at Crutchfield (which you should be able to find cheaper). It has an auxiliary input plug and different trim/face kits available. Amp turn-on Leads, but I did not see if it had RCA outputs. No CD, but and old iPod is a great replacement.

Personally, I would look for a better one with Bluetooth/iPod controls, but due to the 2 shaft design, you will probably not get a CD.
I'm gonna head down to car toys with a tape measure. I think I can build a bracket and put it in the glove box. Looking like alpine at this point. I have a amp, but I may need buy another one to drive my small subwoofer.

They sell the kit for the 1967-68 Camaro without air conditioning at tmccustoms.com. It looks like if you do not have air conditioning you can use that kit.

If you need an amp for those vocals I happen to have a decent little Rockford amp that's just sitting in a box in the garage that you could have for the price of a bottle of Jack Daniels [Coffee]
Seriously though, if you want it, consider it yours as I have no use for it anymore since I went to an Alpine 4 channel when I decided to update to component sets for the front and rear doors of my truck which required the rears to be powered by an amp along with the fronts.
