Geez.... might as well start calling Pikes Peak.....Tesla mountain or something.
Tesla did more neater stuff anyways.
I read that earlier here over an hour ago; http://www.msn.com/en-us/news/us/oba...hest-mountain/
They made mention that the administration wasn't sure how they were going to do this without the approval of Congress. Now the article states; "Jewell is making the change official through an order to the Board on Geographic Names, citing Alaska’s longstanding policy and the name of the surrounding park, Denali National Park."
In other words, 'by order of the emperor'.

According to the order Jewell signed, there is a policy of deferring action while a matter is under consideration by Congress. So the Ohio delegation’s annual legislative efforts have stalled any federal movement. But the law does allow the interior secretary to take action when the board naming doesn’t act “within a reasonable amount of time,” the order said.
“It's something [former Alaska Gov. Jay Hammond] pushed for back in 1975, and because of an effort to stop it in legislation that has not actually gone anywhere in the last 40 years, the Board of Geographic Names did not take it up,” Jewell said.
As interior secretary, she has authority to make a unilateral decision after a “reasonable time has passed,” Jewell said.
“And I think any of us would think that 40 years is an unreasonable amount of time. So we're delighted to make the name change now, and frankly I'm delighted that President Obama has encouraged the name change consistent with his trip,” Jewell said.
I won't be surprised a bit if this ends up in Federal court for the Secretary overstepping their bounds.
Is anyone indigenous in the states besides the Native American Indians?
I support this 100%, as I can think of a few other things I'd like to change back in honor of the generations before me having always done it that way. Since at least before 1932.
I don't have an issue with the name change. More the way they went about doing it.
Most people use the names interchangeable. I think Denali sounds better and if I climbed it prior to the name change; I would have referred to it as Denali.
Nope, you have to climb it again.
When I lived in Alaska during grade school and on my return trips up there in past years, it has always been known as Denali. Tourists were the only ones to call in Mt. McKinley.
Finally, a long standing wrong has been righted. [Tooth]
I heard it was a map maker that named it after a Pres. that never even saw it. It's like naming Main St. Ronald Reagen Way or MLK Blvd. It's still Main St.
You can call it Mt. Susan if it makes you happy.

Panties need to be put in a bunch over much more important things than this.
Yeah it's annoying, but I'd rather have him focused on renaming stuff trying to help his legacy - than shoving some new EO through that messes with my rights again.
I have a friend that just climbed it 2 weeks ago. He posted on FB today that he has to go back and do it again... True story.
So they changed the name of a mountain to match my grand daughter's name right after she moves up there? Yup, I'm cool with that.....
Not cool with how it was done in this great age of PC poop tho.
I say we fight BHO tooth and nail on this. That way we draw resources and his attention away from gun control. It will again shine a light on his habit of going around congress by waving his scepter. After we keep up the pressure for a while we will finally capitulate and he let him win to show we can be reasonable and he can have his way.
Buy the way I like the idea of going back to it's original name. Just be thankful it's not Mt Obama, you know that's what he really wants.
Of all the crap we.have to worry about with this administration this is about #876 on the list.
I have a feeling if we did this, he'd use that as a distraction for us, to go and do what he wants while no one is looking. He certainly has the resources to do so.
Good spot for him to be in. Do whatever to see if people take the bait so he can something bigger. If they don't, he can spend time making a bunch of little changes and still have a great overall affect on his desire to change things.
I don't know...
I am not so hot on changing official names of places to appease certain target audiences. What do "rank and file" Alaskans, NOT indigenous activists or self-loathing liberals, think about the name?
I am sure there are other folks waiting in the wings to promote the change of other mountains named after other old, white men.
Actually Alaska renamed it back in the 1970's. They thought naming it after presidential hopeful from Ohio who never even saw Alaska was stupid. Ohio has fought tooth and nail over making Denali the official name since the 1970's. But, you probably already know this.
Nobody I know who has actually climbed it has referred to it as anything but Denali.
Who gives a fuck? It's a fucking mountain. I hereby name all mountains Mt Rock
Obama named it after himself, "The High One."
If one were so inclined and possessed the proper equipment, training, and a bit of luck, one could still Mount a McKinley.

The cultural cleansing continues.
Actually, this is undoing a cultural cleansing that happened decades ago.
Climbers - who are pretty much the only ones who ever set foot on the mountain, have never called it McKinley. The name was a nonsense move trying to gain political favor. It's always been Denali, always will be.
It all depends on who deems which culture to be the most important...at the time.
Alaska-bound, Obama faces backlash on Mt. McKinley renaming
Quote:
WASHINGTON (AP) — Shrinking glaciers, Arctic temperatures and a mix of messy energy politics await President Barack Obama as he begins his historic trip to Alaska. Meanwhile, his decision to rename Mount McKinley faced a backlash from Ohio politicians protective a native son from the state, former President William McKinley.
Obama departs on Monday morning for a three-day tour of the nation's largest state, closely choreographed to call attention to the ways Obama says climate change is already damaging Alaska's stunning scenery. By showcasing thawing permafrost, melting sea ice and eroding shorelines, Obama hopes to raise the sense of urgency to deal quickly to slow climate change in the U.S. and overseas.
His excursion north of the Arctic Circle will make Obama the first sitting president to step foot in the Alaska Arctic, home to Alaska Natives who have received less attention amid Obama's recent efforts to improve conditions for Native Americans. In a major show of solidarity, Obama announced on the eve of his trip that his administration is changing the name of North America's tallest peak, Mount McKinley, to Denali, its traditional Athabascan name.
Obama's move to strip the mountain of its name honoring former President William McKinley drew loud condemnations from Ohio lawmakers, including Republican Rep. Bob Gibbs, who said he planned to work with his colleagues to see what they could do to stop it.
I think the imposition of more government control and the wasting of our tax dollars in the name of "climate change" is the bigger problem here. Fortunately, the world at large doesn't see "climate change" as a priority.
Barely enough interest to comment.
I am more concerned about my belief that a majority of Americans could not find Alaska on a labeled globe, much less be able to find Denali/Mckinley.
Yea, pretty much true. I've always known it as both Mt. McKinley and Denali, and have used the terms interchangeably. But, when you're in the presence of The Mountain, it is Denali.
I climbed the mountain in 1979, as part of a 3.5 month solo motorcycle trip to the arctic circle and back when I backpacked into several wilderness areas.
My biggest problem with the renaming is not just tradition and the fact that the park itself was renamed Denali in 1980, but that the half-black Marxist bigot Barack Obama has done so in his concerted effort to erase the history and contributions of white men to our nation. For that reason alone, the next president should rename the mountain, Mt. McKinley.

Alaskans go by the name Denali..
They have tried over and over to change the name BACK to Denali but senators from Ohio continually block it as McKinley was from Ohio. This has nothing to do with Obama.
I how Obama opens the pass between Boulder and Grand County next.
