Unintended consequences.

So I have been building a garage and it is only about a month or so behind. Meanwhile since I have purchased the paint and supplies for it the wife thinks it is a good time to paint/stain the deck. What started out 2 days ago as something simple turned into a chop/cut/rebuild project. But it has splinters, but this is a little tore up.......

So I buy $100 worth of redwood and rebuild the top rail and some other stuff. Then we clean and sand. After spending about 1/2 an hour doing one little section of the lattice work jerry says screw this and buys an airless sprayer for $130. The good part is that it worked, the bad part is I did not notice just how far the overspray was going.

Scotch bright pads will take care of it but I did not think it would throw paint 10' [Rant1]Attachment 60773 Attachment 60774 Attachment 60775

Cheap blue tarps from Harbor Freight & duct tape will save you lots of heart ache and clean up............

Sadly, I have a bunch of both. I even have a bunch of heavy plastic drop material and old bed sheets. Never thought the overspray would get that far but then I am used to automotive stuff.[dig]
It can put out the material and I need to stain the back wall before winter so it will be great for that.

I bought the HVLP system with separate blower and 15' hose.

Which sprayer is that? I've been thinking of picking up one at Harbor Freight, but I think I was seeing it for around $170 or so.

Once I got it dialed in it worked fine and it is not loud at all. I like the separate blower as it makes the unit much lighter.

Looking good Jerry.

I used to have a Wagner backpack unit. Bought it to stain my fence. After wearing as much stain as I put on the fence (it even penetrated 3 layers of clothing), I gave up on spraying & went to brushing/rolling. Wasted less & it went on just as quickly. I especially hated cleaning the water blocking stain off of the Wagner parts. Bottom line: I'll stick to brushes & rollers.

Also, years ago when I was in IL, the Base commander got on a kick to paint EVERYTHING chestnut brown. He even had crews (.mil doing base additionsl duties) spray paint all of the chain link fences inside the base. Wasted a lot of paint until they got the idea too put plywood behind the area being painted and then scrape off the overspray from the plywood and reuse it. Major waste of time & energy for a damned chain link fence. The guy got hammered by safety when he had all of the stop signs painted front & back the same chestnut brown. Finally caved to just painting the backs brown & leaving the front red per federal code.

One of the problems is the difference in dry time with materials meAnt to be sprayed by professionals versus materials design to be used by amateurs. Materials for pros typically have extremely fast dry times, like on the order of seconds, which makes them spray only. Materials designed for amateurs often have extremely long dry times so they can be brushed. As a result, materials for amateurs will still be wet when they contact objects far away.

I will tend to agree. I am used to automotive pro stuff that is dead @ 10". Once I got the sprayer and material the way it should be after realizing the instructions were clueless the rest went as good as could be expected for a chunk of plastic with a design like a precision paint gun. I was told this all happened at the start of this adventure. And the deck looks good as it is what the wife wanted. Meanwhile I now have a garage. Not a chance. I am at that point where I want the ones done put up for a nice weekend and room to work on the others. That was lacking. It is 28' deep so I have my storage in the back.[Flower]

Not much done in a week because it has failed inspection twice. They had to pull all the trim off and add nails. then it failed again because of other nails. The good is we were able to paint underneath the trim and paint the trim that was off. All shelf braces are in and the small amount of electrical has been set up for later. Passed inspection. [Flower] Prepped, primed, painted the floor. A coat of clear goes on tomorrow and the trim gets re-installed. Attachment 61141 Attachment 61142

Looks nice! You might want to consider a window or two for for light and ventilation, makes a BIG difference in the summer. Vent the crap out of the roof too, especially if you plan on drywalling the lid.

No windows. This is for storage only. I did have them install gable vents so after it is all done I will put in some Soffit vents. might get Sheetrock up top later.

An update. Been a little slow going with family coming first. Shelving is up. I have one last freestanding unit to put up after they send me the parts. Still have tire racks and light duty stuff. The lift is on hold for another couple of months. Still have lots to do. Love the low voltage LED lighting. The pic was taken with just two strings lit no flash. In wall speakers sound like crap. If I put on a lid I will texture it. I have a rare texture in the house. You have no idea how hard it is to make repairs on it..... Besides, a flat wall painted in gloss reflects more light. Because we will spend time out there. I am doing a solar set up and adding a stereo was $100. We are using it while we continue to work on the garage. Still have lots to do.[Flower]

I had hoped to use the other two sets of speakers for the main garage. I think I will stick to the HPM's or the NS 690's. The wife has almost finished painting the trim. More to follow.
