quantity of rifling grooves in circa1988 m16 standard infantry issue

Ok, guys, I have asked a few questions about the info my work partner has said about his m16 when he was in the army during the 1st desert storm involving Kuwait. He says his m16 had only one rifling groove in the barrel. This is the same guy who said his barrel was bent and that the barrels were so worn that the bullet actually bounced on the sides of his barrel. So, I can't seem to find any info about the rifling in the barrels in that time frame. I can't wait to hear feed back about THIS! :-) This gets to be a little fun to be able to quiet him down when I get the REAL answers from you guys!

This is one of those cases where I didn't even need to be there to know that he's wrong...

Believe it is 1/7 RH twist 6 groove in the A2

If you were front line you had the A2 that was only a few years old. If you were support then many still had the A1. Many of my guys were expert with the old crappy (sarcasm) A1's leading up to DS1. Unit Armorer 16 mash 89-91. [Flower]

I heard they had to run a patch down the barrel at every mag change. Something about the groove getting leaded up from the rounds rattling down it. If they didn't clean it out, it would plug up and esplode.

The military has never been known to discriminate based on low intelligence. The guy is either a total tool or he really is pretty unintelligent. Hopefully he isn't participating in the "stolen valor" program.

Maybe he was using an 03a3. He could have been the Barney Fife of his unit.

Is he also one of those types who thinks that calling the 5.56 round a tumbler round means it goes end over end in the air? I knew a few people in the Army that thought that's what it meant.

When we were cleaning our M1 Garands, NO ONE ever mentioned for us to take it easy with the steel cleaning rods so they don't "bugger UP" the muzzle by letting the rod press heavily against the bore. None of us young recruits seemed to give a shit about the integrity of the bores.

I've had people in the Army tell me with a straight face that "The Soviets have an advantage over us because their guns can shoot our rounds but our guns can't shoot theirs." [facepalm]

Ahh, you guys are great!!!! I'm somewhat new(3 years but non-military)) to shooting, I just didn't want to tell him he was full of shit about the "one rifling groove" in the barrels of his rifle when he was in service, without having served, and being new to shooting. It just seemed to be really against everything I have learned these past three years about firearms, that's why I asked. I just wanted to make sure he was out in left field. The bouncing bullet around in the barrel was just dumb. But he was telling me how ALL military barrels only had ONE groove. He swears by it. It's not like he's doing a false valor thing, I know he was in service(82nd Airborn, he says), he has pictures of himself in Kuwait with desert shots and other service guys there too. Where do these guys get this weirdness from?

Place a bet with him, for as much money as he's willing to lay down, that he cannot get his hands on and show you a gun with one groove. Heck, I'm fairly certain no production gun was ever manufactured with a single groove barrel. At the least, it would cause an imbalance in the projectile and be wildly inaccurate.
This guy requires public humiliation. Sometimes it's the only way.

One groove barrel is unpossible.

Only time I can imagine a bullet ever even remotely rattling around in the bbl is when someone has a 12 gauge and uses one of the adapters that will enable to fire a .22 RF (maybe a squib) cartridge in it. Even then the bullet is going way to fast to "rattle" around IN the bore.
