Need to get a new bed for my Mom as she's been very uncomfortable on her current mattress which is less than 6 months old. I've been to several "matress forums" which seem more like advertising sites than discussion forums. She's tending toward trying the Sleep Number right now.
What do you suggest?
Have her test fire and handle some first. She probably has the training already.
Waterbed. Love em. Had one since...'85ish. Sleep like a babe on it.
I liked my Sleep Number bed. It wasn't the most comfortable but it was great when your S/O likes the opposite in a mattress. Now that I'm single I wouldn't spend the money on one.
We have original memory foam, but it weighs a ton. I think they have new light weight versions that are cheaper to boot.

Tuft and Needle make some good and affordable mattresses. My parents got them 2 months ago and like them a lot.
Mrs. HB and I have been sleeping on a purely memory foam mattress from AFW for the past 3 years. Wasn't super expensive, we both sleep great. No back pain, and I can hardly tell when she moves around.

memory foam, picked it up a while back at matress firm or whatever it is. pretty nice. Bought the generic store brand one to try out, might be worth some extra $ for the fancy ones.
Didn't care for sleep # beds. Got rid of mine last spring. Got a standard mattress with an integrated memory foam pillowtop. The memory foam holds in heat which I find uncomfortable.
I'll likely never get one again, but like WETWRKS, I always had the best nights sleep on a waterbed. Regret getting rid of my last one 20 years ago.
That's where I'd look first because they have a good selection and pricing. Foam, for sure, but selecting one that will last vs. those that fail early may be hard to know. Broken down old folks need a good bed to rest their weary old bones.Quote:

I bought a too-hard spring mattress ($1300, 8 yr guarantee) for the cabin 10 years ago and it tore us up every time we slept on it, even after we put a memory foam topper on it. Still like new, we gave it away last year. A good spring mattress could be useable for 6-10 years.
The sleep number air mattress quality is crap, and way over priced, IMO. I've looked at them many times and they've always looked like low end shit to me. A non starter.
Four years ago I looked at Tempur pedic and then bought a Simmons ComforPedic Loft gel/foam level 4. 25 year warranty on the foam mattress. We'll see about that, but so far I'm impressed. Very comfortable and we move very little through the night. Foam is more immersive, much warmer, sometimes hot. Your mother won't use her electric blanket very often.
Foam/gel mattresses have been on the market long enough that competition is influencing prices. How much is good sleep worth? I'd shun the low-end and buy the best you can afford. Good back support and good sleep is what you're paying for.
After several uncomfortable mostly innerspring mattresses, last fall we switched to a latex mattress. We're very happy with it, and as a bonus were able to get a two sided mattress. I've tried and don't like memory foam because I move around a lot and it does not recover fast enough to suit me.
Take her with you, and have her lay down on as many mattresses as it takes. Have her try memory foam, tufted, latex, spring....the works. Find out why the other one didn't work- too hard? Too soft? Too hot? Too cold? Did springs poke her? Mattresses are an investment, and since she's going to be spending 1/4-1/3 of every 24 hours n it, mattress shopping is something that's going to require her direct input.
Also remember that you're not required to buy from the place you're shopping at. Check out a few stores and get one that really works for her.
We had an old mattress when we moved out here, and my back had been killing me for months. We stopped at a mattress store, and we both lay down on each one. No dice. Three mattress stores later, I was getting incredibly frustrated and ready to give up, and I tried one last mattress. It was very firm, and the second I lay down, my back cracked all the way up. That was the sign!

You can save a lotta $$ buying mattresses off of Amazon.com believe it or not. Recently got a new memory foam. Showed up fedex in a long box. Carried it upstairs, put it on the bed, unwrapped the plastic and let it roll itself out, then fluff up over 8-10 hours. Very comfortable, highly rated mattresses. They're the same ones you get from the stores without the markup.
If you get a memory foam get one with the pillow top (it conforms to your body almost instantly), and one that has the comfort gel (maximizes airflow to keep the mattress from getting too hot). I have had a Tempur for 6 years or so now, but picked up one of the AFW memory foams for the guest room a few months ago and it is very nice.

Nothing fancy for me, personally. Got a new Serta a few months back on a huge sales at Macy's. Needed something a lot stiffer, and it fit the bill.
I hated the sleep number. Tempurpedic cloud deluxe breeze now. Life changing (and wallet changing).

We've had a sleep number bed for over 15 years now. We find it hard to beat. King size and we can adjust sides separately. Only complaint is sometimes there's a little soft spot in between the mattresses when the foam spacers get a little tired.

We've had a memory gel bed from Innomax for the past year and love it. We were going to do the Tempurpedic, but decided on the one from Innomax because it was a lot cheaper.
I had a memory foam for 11 years but the last couple of years it felt too soft and I was waking with back aches. Just bought a used Sleep Number and it has been excellent although I'd probably balk at what they want for a new one. As others stated, have her test them out -- preferences are so individual that you really have to see what fits.
