Help 300 win mag vs 30-06

Need help choosing the next caliber I am going to get a Remington 700 long action not sure if I want 30-06 or 300 win mag the rifle will be used for some hunting mostly punching paper

Depends on how far you want to shoot, how much you want to shoot, how heavy you want your rifle to be etc. Both are great calibers. -06 is my favorite hunting cartridge because of its versitilty and availability. 300 win mag is a great hunting round as well but is considerably more expensive and less fun to shoot in any volume out of a hunting weight rifle because of its recoil. On the other hand, in a heavy barrel configuration with a nice muzzle brake and a good stock or chassis it is a blast to shoot at paper. The .300 win cartridge is capable of shooting accurately depending on the platform and load you are using a loooooooot further than most of us would ever dream of shooting.
All in all I think Jamnanc had a good summary! One gun won't do everything, some times the answer is just buy both and eat ramen for two months!!!

I haven't priced out ammo not really concerned with the cost of ammo it will not be shot as much as my ar15 or my 700 in .308 it will be one that I shoot a few times a year

Screw belted cases go with 3006 all say long. It may not say magnum but it's a hell of a cartridge

The main difference between the two cartridges is a few hundred feet/sec for the same bullet weight. With a 150 grain bullet you gain 2-300 feet per second with the win mag. Where the Win mag shines is heavy weight bullets, like 180 grain and up where now the velocity jump is closer to 500 ft/sec. Point of Interest... with heavy weight bullets the '06 and the 308 are almost ballistic twins.

The down side is because the Win Mag is an overbore for case capacity accuracy does start to degrade around 1500 rounds. Being a low volume gun for you this shouldn't be an issue.

That said, I have an older (1990's) Sendero Remington 700 in 300 Win Mag that is my go to shooter. It is part of my firearms that will never be sold. I would recommend these to anyone. If you can find one in a pre-lock, pre-merger Remington Sendero or Sendero SF are going for about $1500 or more. There are many people selling guns calling them Sendero which are not. A true Sendero will have Sendero written on the barrel. There are the guns that Remington stated were the most accurate rifles they produced. Rumor has it that these Sendero had the choice barrels even before the 700P line.
Sendero was not made in a short action(308), nor in 30-06.

Mag for paper punching isn't my idea of fun. YMMV. For hunting larger game at longer range, mag is hard to beat. When I was thinning the herd a few years back .06 was the one I ditched. Kept .270 and .280 (both based on the .06 case) and kept 7mm mag and 300 Weatherby mag. Of those 5, .06 had the worse performance.

Gonna be the dissenting opinion , for what you're describing put the money in the 308 .

Thanks every one I went to the range with a friend he just got a 300 win mag the 30-06 is so much more comfortable to shoot I think I will be going with the 30-06

I have a 300 mag Browning A-bolt that was a bear to shoot before I had a muzzle break installed now I can shoot it comfortably. I shoot 168 Sierra match king reloads in it and the results are amazing, it is by far the most accurate / rifle ammo combo I own and certainly more capable than my skill level.

Glad you were able to try them out and decide for yourself! I agree with you, the -06 is far more comfortable to shoot. at least until you can put a brake/can on the Mag [Beer]

I hate the belted cases too for bore alignment, case life and feeding (I like the idea of the Dakota cartridges - basically the classic magnums without the belt). The 300 win mag is a classic for sure, but for me it's 20-25% more powder for a 10% increase in speed.

Also, the lighter the bullet, the more erratic your numbers will come out with the magnum. It may or may not matter to you, but the .300 win mag is for 165's and up IMO.

Anyway, sounds like you landed on the .30-06 for the number one reason most people give up on magnums...
