"We were making our way out and when we were right by the door there was a massive explosion and everybody was screaming," concert-goer Catherine Macfarlane told Reuters.

"It was a huge explosion - you could feel it in your chest. It was chaotic. Everybody was running and screaming and just trying to get out."
Witnesses reported that many children were at the concert.

Manchester Arena, the largest indoor arena in Europe, opened in 1995 and is a popular concert and sporting venue.

A spokesman for Ariana Grande, 23, said the singer was "okay." A video posted on Twitter showed fans, many of them young, screaming and running from the venue.

Britain is on its second-highest alert level of "severe" meaning an attack by militants is considered highly likely.

"He further informed all three victims that he was upset due to America bombing his Muslim countries," police Detective Kenneth Nightlinger wrote in his report.

Officers talked Arthurs into letting the hostages go and dropping his weapon, and took him into custody.

While in custody, police said Arthurs started talking about killing two people, and then he directed them to a condominium complex where the four roommates shared an apartment.

"I had to do it," Arthurs told police. "This wouldn't have had to happen if your country didn't bomb my country."

I have the book on my shelf, read it a couple of times.

Understood, I think in mostly American terms, I see Europe is experiencing the wrath now. Ours is coming soon, the islamists here will see the success their brethren are having in Europe and correctly deduce that they will experience the same success here.

I don't think "they" really sided with Islam. Rather "they" just stuck their collective head in the sand and tried to ignore it, thinking it's best not to make anybody angry and eventually business as usual may resume. This has been the status quo for many years. I recall sitting in a conference room not too long after the 1982 bombing of the Marine barracks in Lebanon listening to "terrorism countermeasures" we could take to protect ourselves. What struck me was the fact that everything mentioned was oriented toward stopping a bad guy we figured had self preservation in mind. The fact that there are people willing to kill themselves to make a statement hadn't sunk in then and still hasn't.

Do you want to live in a world where terrorist attacks aren't easy to carry out? I'm not sure that I do. I'm not sure how that would manifest though.

Last time I lived in the UK, we had nuclear bombers with preassigned targets in the mideast. F-111E's with neutron bombs. I worked the ECM systems.
The British were much more concerned with IRA terrorism. I never heard anything about Muslims in the press or media. We need a new strategy. Something like the old one.

These terrorists are the modern version of Kamikaze. I don’t know what can be reasonably done to defend ourselves from them and still give us a reasonable level of freedom. I believe it may be time to avoid going anyplace that requires you to be stranded in a crowd outside of the controlled space of a venue. Any time we leave sporting events and gather to board light rail or buses we are vulnerable to the new crowd based Kamikaze. I know I personally will never again be outside on the Vegas strip on New Years eve.
