Basically, some scientists gave drugs to a bunch of Germans to see if they would be nicer to refugees and it looks like it worked. Then they gave people drugs and guilt (by telling them everyone else was more generous) and the participants were even nicer to refugees.

Drugs may influence some to "decide" that doing stupid shit is ok. It's up to the individual to make that decision though. Not government.

You're right. I was thinking of when the main guy in 1984 was sent to the Ministry of Love. You know, to drug and torture him to make him love Big Brother and the party agenda.

Interesting to note that Oxytocin isn't actually a drug, but a hormone. It's the one that gets released when you do something like hug your kid.

Point taken but it's really just semantics. Anything you sniff up your nose (which is what they did in the study, administered oxytocin via nasal spray) that results in an altered state of mind is a drug.

I didn't see anywhere in the study that said if it was a natural hormone or synthetic either.

The morality here is settled. The thought leaders know what's best and the ends justify the means. People are being robbed, raped, and murdered in Europe over this right now. The folks in power know these consequences and accept them for the greater good.

Give these people a monopoly on violence and there's no end to the human suffering and destruction they will cause is the search for their utopia.

You know, on boards like this one there's a lot of talk about the schism between the "establishment" Republicans and the more conservative ones who feel their voices aren't being heard and that they are being sold out by the mainstream party.

What we don't often discuss here is that the same thing is happening on the Democrat side, too. The hard core "Bernie bros" hate the Dem "establishment" (as embodied by Hillary) and while they can't win, they can probably take enough votes away from any mainstream Dem candidate to ensure that the Dem loses - which gives them power, of a sort, and means that they can't simply be brushed off or ignored.

I think the Democrats, much more than the Republicans, are a kind of "patchwork" party that is composed of various constituent groups that don't necessarily like each other but that (sometimes) stick together for the "common good." But as we saw with Bernie, (and before with Nader) it doesn't take much to cause that coalition to start fracturing.

I think that's particularly true since the Dems decided to go all-in on the whole "identity politics" thing. When you say (or imply) that "we represent blacks AGAINST whites" "we represent gays AGAINST straights" "we represent illegals AGAINST citizens" "We represent non-Christians AGAINST Christians" you don't give white, straight "mainstream" Americans much to come out for, even if they are people who might otherwise support the Democrat agenda.

As we saw in the 2016 election, particularly white, working class people in the Midwest who have fairly traditional viewpoints, either voted Trump or stayed home (which was effectively the same thing) not so much because they liked or supported the Republican party (many of them were union members who had been die-hard Democrats for life and who hated the Republicans as the "party of the rich") but because they were basically ignored and taken for granted by the Democratic party, who figured they "owned" those votes and didn't have to work for them.

Then Trump came along and started saying the same things they were thinking and whether they liked Republicans or not, they naturally responded to the only candidate who was really talking to THEM.

The inherent flaw with "identity politics" is that it is based on carving out a bigger piece of pie for a favored group - and the problem the Democrats have with that is that giving a bigger piece of pie to one of their constituent groups means a smaller piece of pie for another one.

And it probably helped Trump that many of the Republican Party leaders hate Trump and some even openly said they would prefer Clinton over him.

You can't win your base until you have identified who is in your base. By doing that you are also identifying who is not in your base and taking a chance that those are the people you are alienating. There are many fault lines in American society. Winning elections is about putting together dissimilar groups and keeping them together long enough to get something accomplished.

I'm voting for the people that want to disassemble the massive federal bureaucracy. If all of the taxes collected on an individual were collected by federal, state, and local governments, I would like to see a 20%, 40%, 40% split in collection and control of those taxes. I would like to see a balanced budget amendment to the US Constitution that prevented deficit spending. I would like to see some criminal convictions for federal employees who violate the US Constitution.

None of these seem likely but I like to dream. Does that make me a Dreamer?
