Well, he got what he wanted. Pretty crappy to involve the police as unwilling suicide accomplices, not that we're talking about a stable person to begin with.
Yet bleeding hearts still denounce excessive force. Ft Collins has just about overtaken boulder.
The Californication of Colorado is strong in west Windsor, too. I'm surrounded by liberal soccer moms who think the government should "do something" about the coyotes "threatening" their yippy kick dogs who roam off leash in their unfenced back yards. Ironically, their neighborhood is called "Country Farms."
In Windsor?
Man I don't feel like it was that long ago that Windsor and Ft. Collins were conservative areas wanting their guns and to be left alone...even with the college campus. When I was younger my friends and I would try to hang with the CSU girls since they tended to be more conservative and "country." Can't believe how this state has changed.
Can't say they were trigger happy and didn't give the dude a chance . . . seemed pretty determined to get himself ventilated. If you charge a cop with a knife, you're gonna have a bad day.

I don't see what else could have been done. The officer waited for back-up before attempting a non-lethal response and the subject charged him. I feel sorry for the officers, and very glad they did not suffer a cross fire casualty.
