How do I renew my Jefferson County concealed handgun permit?
It is the applicant's responsibility to submit for renewal of a permit before the expiration date on the permit card. You must submit a renewal only in the county you reside, own property, or own a business. Applicants may submit a completed application, proof of residency (a valid Colorado driver's license, Colorado ID or Military Photo Identification) and $35 within 120 days before the permit expires. The “Proof of Firearms Training” on the back of the application does not pertain to renewal applicants as long as a certificate is already on file and the existing permit card is not more than six months expired. The applicant must deliver the original application in person to the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office Records Unit. Incomplete applications will not be accepted. Per C.R.S. 18-12-205 (2) (a), all applicants must sign the completed application in the presence of the issuing county sheriff or designee. These permits are valid for an additional five years from the issuance date.
I knew someone else would google it for me. Thanks!
I live in Park County and it is 120 days in advance, too. Likely straight out of the statute, I bet. Good reminder.

Just a comment on renewing....
I was told the "Proof of Firearms Training" had to have occurred in the last ten years. For most folks, that means you may get two renewals on one certificate. If however, you renew a little early, you may squeeze in three. I've seen it done.
YMMV
Arapahoe County, I lost 2 1/2 months on my last renewal. I went in that much before the expiration, as was on their web site at the time, to apply for renewal 120 days prior to Expiration. I went in a little short of that time and was issued my renewal within 20 minutes, with an expiration date 5 years from that date.
So check with your county sheriffs office, some now have certain days of the week and hours on those days for CCW permits & renewals.
Took about a month for my renewal in Jeffco
I waited too long, and had a gap between permit periods. Don’t be like me.
I appreciate the reminder as mine also expires in June. The sheriff's office estimates 6-8 weeks to process renewals.
Note for those who change address within the state, you must submit a change of address form within 30 days to the county sheriff that issued your card. Failure to do so renders the CHP void and one would have to submit a new application.
Looks like there is a great deal of flexibility on what constitutes Firearms Training requirements. Here is what is posted on the El Paso County Sherrif's office page:
Firearms Training Requirements
The applicant must submit with the application the original certificate or a photocopy of the certificate with the instructors original signature, affidavit, or other document from the instructor, school, club, business, organization, or group that conducted or taught the course or class, attesting to the successful completion of the training. All documentation must have been obtained within the 10 years preceding submittal of the application.
The applicant demonstrates competence with a handgun by submitting any of the following:
Evidence of experience with a firearm through participation in organized shooting competitions or current military service;
Evidence that, at the time the application is submitted, the applicant is a certified instructor;
Proof of honorable discharge from a branch of the United States Armed Forces within the three years preceding submittal of the application;
Proof of honorable discharge from a branch of the United States Armed Forces that reflects pistol qualifications obtained within the ten years preceding submittal of the application;
A certificate showing retirement from a Colorado law enforcement agency that reflects pistol qualifications obtained within the ten years preceding submittal of the application;
A training certificate from a handgun training class obtained within the ten years preceding submittal of the application. The applicant shall submit the original training certificate or a photocopy thereof that includes the original signature of the class instructor. To the extent permitted by section 18-12-202 (5), in obtaining a training certificate from a handgun training class, the applicant shall have discretion in selecting which handgun training class to complete.
Found the last point interesting.
Date of my military retirement is outside the 10 year mark, so guess it is time to sign up for a class. Doing a CCW class might not be a bad option since I haven't taken one, plus my son has expressed interest in carrying as well. Magnum's Tactical Move and Shoot class would have more of the "fun" factor.
There is no requirement to get trained again once you have a permit. Jefferson County dropped the specific days and is now 8 to 3:30 M-F Records Department. Takes about 30 days on average in JeffCO.
You are in the window, get er done. :)
Appreciate the clarification. The page on the website doesn't clarify one way or another but won't complain about saving the money.
Process was pretty painless. I submitted my paperwork in late Apr and just received my new card a couple of days ago.
Fast very fast
Put my renewal in last week for jeffco.
Was in talking to them Monday, she said to do it as soon as you possibly can.
They are running a little slow, and you don't want to get caught in the middle, without.....
My jeffco renewal ended up taking just over 6 weeks.
Arapahoe County renewal was same day. I walked in, they did whatever they do, and I walked out with my new permit. I was pleasantly surprised. Kudos to them for having a streamlined process.
What?s process after you expire? I thought mine expired in 19 and it turns out it expired 04/18.
Do I have to start the process all over again?

Well.. I just found out the answer to my question and since I?m over 6 months expired I have to apply for a new permit again. Does anyone know if I?ll have to take the class again or will my expired permit serve as proof that I completed the training requirements?

I was in Jeffco last week and they said 4-6 weeks.
BigDee,
If your training class was less than 10 years ago, it should be good. Since that is what they require when you put in a new application.
If it was more than 10 years ago.............well........
But I am not a lawyer and do not play one on tv, therefore can not give legal advice.
Like pickenup said if your satey class cert is under the 10 year mark your gtg if not you'll have to take another, give me a PM if its the latter
Pickenup and Mazin are correct you cert is good for 10 years then re-cert is required
Does the 10 year limit on certifications pertain to current valid permits ? I am up or renewal in several months, and my certificate will be 10 years old.
If this applies to me, I’ll be looking to get a cheap coffee & donuts recertification class in the next 6 months or so.
The "Proof of Training" is for new applicants only. It is not required for renewals.
The renewal form is not county specific. Put in the change of address form when you move, then just do a renewal in Jefferson.
If the card has not yet expired, change your address with the county that issued your permit. When it is time to renew your permit, the permit must be renewed in the county in which you currently reside. Notification of a change of address or name change must be made to Jefferson County Sheriff's Office (JCSO) within 30 days. Please submit the notarized Address / Name Change Form (PDF) in person to JCSO Records Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. along with your valid Colorado driver's license. A new card will be issued.

If you do not do a change of address form within 30 days, there is a good chance they will require you to start over.
Within 30 days after a permittee changes the address or name specified on his or her permit or within three business days after his or her permit is lost, stolen, or destroyed, the permittee shall notify the issuing Sheriff of the change of address or name, or permit loss, theft, or destruction. Failure to notify the Sheriff pursuant to C.R.S. 18-12-210(1) is a class 1 petty offense. The required address or name change, stolen, lost or destroyed form must be notarized. The Records Unit personnel can notarize these forms as needed.
Thanks! Great info - I appreciate it.
Just FYI, it took exactly 3 weeks for JeffCO to renew my permit.
I'm within the 120 day expiration. How much time do I need to budget for a visit to the BoCo Sheriff? Will this just be a 10 minute visit to give them a check or do I need to plan an hour or more for new fingerprints, BGC, etc?
Arapahoe renews on the spot if it?s before the expiration date. You get a new picture but not fingerprints. Credit/debit or check for payment, $63. They do run bg check while you?re there and if you pass you get your new 5yr permit along with a letter stating if something pops on a deeper records search you?ll be contacted.
Arapahoe is Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays 8a-4p for either new or renewals. I was in and out in about 20 mnutes, no one else was there when I went, spent 10 of those minutes catching up with some buddies lol.
My wife and I renewed 1/7 and I recieved my renewal at 2wks give or take a day but, my wife still hasn't recieved her renewed permit. Tomorrow will be exactly 6wks....may have to go down to jeffco Tuesday.
My permit expires end of June. I spoke to Boulder County today and they said its running less than a month right now for renewals.
Just received the renewal form yesterday. Bank requires an appointment for certified check and notary.
Everything is extra effort these days and i don't even want to go out. I'll just grab my mask and go.
Just an FYI, JeffCO posted this on Twitter recently.Attachment 80748
