Anyone know if I need some kind of permit if I wanted a fence in the front yard between me and my neighbor? It'll be 5ft high and basically it's gonna extend 25ft from the existing fence. It won't go straight out to the sidewalk. Basically something like this drawing.

I know in my city I would need a permit for that. I hear Aurora is pretty bad about permits, so count on it. You can just call the Aurora building department and they'll let you know your fence options.
My guess is that your city requires a permit for everything including repairs.
That said, I would probably put the fence up and see what happens, I would make sure you are completely on your property line.
one caveat would be if your neighbor is opposed to, or has a problem with you putting up a fence, if that is the case I would pull a permit.

Set back from main road, height and in some cases where HOA's are present style & color. These are all things a call to the zoning dept will answer, also look at Arapahoe cty and city of aurora's web sites
Aurora requires a permit to remove an old fence, replace an existing fence, or install a new one. Figure the permit cost at 10% of the total job cost (materials and labor).

Also check with your HOA, Aurora is big on HOAs in most neighborhoods. And they all have their HOA nazis running them.
My little brother brought great shame to our family line when he bought a condo, and was the HOA president within two years.
Fence usually has to be 50% see through on front of house and from front of house to street and such too. No taller than 36 inches etc etc etc.
Hopefully not in a flood plane, then it requires to be so far off the ground etc. (if allowed at all)
rules get crazy sometimes.
I inquired about having to remove some fence due to the cities requirements of my new driveway placement, yep, you'll need a permit if replacing, removing or moving more than 8 feet of fence.
grrrrr Their traffic rules, required garage rules, and required fence changes, which requires more rules. ^#%&#%^!@$#

If you can believe it, Denver is one of the exceptions. No permit required if it's under, either 4 or 5 feet. It's worth a call.
Threads like this make me glad I live outside city limits in a county without a code enforcement dept... I hired a very reputable electrician to fix a huge mess (undoubtedly caused by no code enforcement), and he said he could start the next morning and fit it in while waiting for a permit inside the city limits...

I never knew there were places without permits, but now I live in one.
Property taxes are high, but I saved $4000 in permit fees on work I've done or had done this year alone (at a 10% rate)... in Fremont county, I think the rate was lower, but had a 30x42' Cleary building with a 10' overhang on the 42' side (so a 40x42' roof) built for about $15k, but the county said it was worth $30k, so based the permit fee.off that... I've been on homes (near Joplin, MO) that were so new they didn't even show up on Google maps and they had no roof felt at all, just shingles attached straight to decking.Quote:

Permit fee was based on estimated sq ft of my new garage. 65000 value the city says regardless of what I build it for. Like $2800 permit fee.
