It always blows my mind how some one can shoot another person while hunting. Deer and humans do not resemble each other at all.
Glad to hear your friend made it through being shot. I have a few CAT's and a trauma kit that go with me to the range, after reading that I need to get med kits for my vehicles. Better to have and not need than need and not have. Thanks for posting his story.

That was really tough to read. Not a lot of things get to me, but that almost made me nauseous.
I probably wouldn't of had a ride out of the woods... well maybe the kid i guess...
With how he described the being shot part i had that same type of feeling when i put the arrow through my leg.. kinda like something happend but you dont realize what you just know its probably not good..
That dude is strong and thank god he had a CAT.. if you are an outdoors guy, or shoot, or travel if you dont already have CAT'S get them! I have 2 but im definitely buying more after reading this! Thanks to you and John for sharing this!
I just ordered 3 CATs myself. One for each car and one for the hunting, fishing, etc. pack. Every time I hear about them I tell myself to pick a few up. This story really made me get off my ass. Thanks.
Very sobering. That this guy didn't lose the leg is amazing. That he regained/maintained the composure to apply the CAT himself after the extent of his injury is even more so amazing.
Will definitely be bringing a few CATs into the woods this season along with IFAK. And I'll be packing orange flagger's tape to wrap around the antlers if we get a bull down. I should probably throw my VS17 panel in the truck for day extraction and a few chem lights on 550 cord (swing overhead to mark for pilot) for night to mark extract LZ in the event of such a need. Driving out to a hospital would be a no-go in the event of a CAT-use situation and would require helo extraction, given the area we will be in.
Every year bowhunters stab themselves on their broadheads -- usually upper or lower leg it seems, based on reading. Some because they are impatient morons and actually stalk with a nocked arrow. Others because they nock an arrow and the animal moves and they have to make a short stalk, step over something with their eyes on the animal not realizing they are placing their leg in the path of a razor. Others because, well, stuff happens.
John is a bad ass for sure!
I first met him at our T.C.C.C class and he shared his story.
John is a mounted Deputy that is why it was so important for him to keep his leg so he could continue to ride his horse.
The man who shot John lost his hunting privileges for 5 years and had to pay some fines – that’s it.
Great read and glad your buddy is alive. As someone who was supposed to lose their leg from an accident (pretty damn grateful they saved it), I honestly thought that I might have had mine amputated if I were in his shoes, that’s a hell of a recovery.

Well written. I can relate to some of what he said from past personal medical emergencies. If I was as remote as he was, my chances of survival would have been greatly reduced. I'm pretty much of the understanding that when it's not "your time", it's not your time. When it is "your time", no wealth of medical equipment, knowledge, or skill can keep you in this world.
