Fwiw, the strike eagle 1-8x is likely sufficient for daily carry needs & the bdc is specific to the 308 (unlike the vortex s.e. 1-6x)
Xtr ii 1-8x doesn't suck & would be my choice for a tactical rifle but it's in another price point.
Primary use and budget?
I can easily recommend everything from a dot to a 4.5-27
I'm curious what you don't like about the Primary Arms optic?
Staying with a Vortex. the Viper HST 4-16 is a good choice. Not sure if that is in your budget.
Vortex announced at SHOTshow a 1-10X by 24 mm Razor although 2900 smackers is a bit rich for my blood.
Any thoughts on the sig tango's
This just arrived in the mail today, and I?m mounting it on a S&W M&P-10 for an upcoming hog hunt. I got the 1-8x24

Swampfox is low end Chinese imports , the saying you get what you pay for is especially true with optics , there is a reason that you hear of the " value " priced optics failing exponentially more than others .
I used a Vortex Crossfire 1-4 for a hog hunt two weeks ago. It worked great, but I wanted something with more reach. PSA has vortex Strike Eagle 1-8 on sale for $299 w/free shipping so I'm upgrading.
I run a Nikon Monach 4-16 on my other AR10 upper. The farthest I've run it is 600 yards and I can't complain. A few years ago it seemed like Nikon was one of the best values but lately Vortex has had some great sales. For your budget of wanting something good, but not wanting to spend too much, Vortex is your friend.
Nikon has discontinued selling firearms optics .
Another thing to think about, are you wanting to hit steel plates at 500 yards or shoot for groups at 500 yards? I can bang steel with a 4x scope at 500 all day long but shooting for small group sizes with the same scope is a little more difficult
Edit to add, ive heard good things aboit the bushnell engage line for the money

The low end chinese import ended up dropping some hogs over the weekend. Blinds were 80-120 yds out, 1 hog dropped during daylight, 2 others were under moon-light & feeder lights. I hunted with a different rifle, but my wife was happy with it on the AR-10. We?ll see if it holds up and if it retains zero but for now, no regrets.

I’m looking to put an optic on an AR10 and I’m thinking I may go Leupold Mark 5 3.6-18 since it is compact in length and fairly light weight.
I have no experience with this, but thought it looked interesting:
