Big Snow, maybe

I love a good springtime upslope! The models are still all over the place but starting to come together. We're certain to get at least a foot by the time it's over. But the potential still exists for four feet or more. Bring it, we'll take all the water we can get.

Bring it on!

Good advice GG. We're seriously hoping for several big, historic level snowstorms over the next six weeks. It would be okay to get 6 feet like we had in when, 2003? when it buried the truck to the roof top. We cleared the driveway by hand shoveling 3 days before the state opened the highway. Now I have a snowthrower.

It's terribly shy on snowpack this year. I was scanning through photos I took in 2017 when we had three times the snow that we do now. And after the historic fires that forced us to evacuate last October, most all the mountain folk here want as much water we can get in the drainages before summer. Bring it on, we're ready.

Well, I listened to the news about the snow.
We got provisions from the store.
We filled the water containers.
We filled the gas tanks in the vehicles.
We checked the spare propane tanks.

Damn, I jinxed it all and the storm will move north now.

Peaceful Valley Campground is situated in a glacial valley, on the banks of the Middle Saint Vrain Creek at an elevation of 8,500 feet in northern Colorado.
The campground has some conifer trees with open grassy areas.

Yes, we're below the terminus of a glacial moraine that holds beaver ponds in a willow carr. Here, the river plunges in rocky cascades. It's in a vortex where snow dumps after crossing the Continental Divide. We typically get twice as much snow as 3 miles downstream.

We had 8', in Nederland, in the 2003 storm. Good times.

Ha! I had a similar experience. Took me 2 days to just dig out the driveway, $300 to get a guy to bulldoze the 200 yards of unmaintained road, and 9 days before the maintained road was cleared. Got a snowblower that summer. Got quite a workout.

For all the older guys, don't forget that peak heart attack season is right during/after winter snows. Don't let ego get in the way of hiring someone where needed, shoveling epic amounts of snow is a lot harder on the body than our body will let on. Really be careful if you honestly haven't ran, biked, or done real cardio workouts in years.

Truth in that, dated a ER nurse years ago and she would have daily stories of "old guys" coming in with heart attack symptoms after shoveling snow from a big storm. She stated it was her number 3 patient killer after illegal drug OD's on a yearly basis. Forgot what the other big killer was but that statement has always stuck with me.

Rondog, where was that picture takin'? I wonder how or why the snow blower is throwing snow out of the shoot in that top pic.?

I bought a new PTO drivin' blower for the tractor earlier this winter. Sounds like I may finally get to put it into action. Yippeee.!

wow, 40" is a monster storm; heck, anything over 12 will cause some major issues.

I wonder how much will get to the springs.....mostly it will depend on when it hits; rain or snow or both or neither. Reports are for 8" to 2 feet.

Time to make sure that the cars cover the area I need clear....

A real meteorologist was on last night and explained the differing predictions for the week-end snow.
All of the models are using satellite information and reports from buoys while the storm is over the ocean, which can not be used to predict potential snow fall.
It is not until the storm hits land when sensors and weather balloons can be launched into the storm that the models start predicting with any accuracy.
And so, no one knows what the snow fall will be. It is all guesswork until data is available.
Much like anything else science related.

The exact path is in question as well, but *sources seem to agree that the storm won't miss Colorado completely.

That was in Fulton, NY, about 12 yrs ago or so. Sent to me by a co-worker at the time. Some BITCHIN' lake effect snow off Lake Ontario, not uncommon up there. And that's not a "snowblower", that's a full-size industrial front-end loader with a blower attachment on it. Blow up the photo.

That's some serious shit up there. Colorado thinks they know snow, HAH! Talk to upstate NY, and many other places. Yeah, we get snow - but other places get [B]SNOW![/B]

Experience talking - do not want to be out in a snow storm with no gas. Nope, nope, nope!
Short story - was doing weather research in northeastern Colorado in the early 70's.
Government provided truck had a faulty gas gauge.
Snowing hard,
Gas gauge full
No Gas
5 mile walk in moderate snow, not the fabled blizzard, but still miserable enough.
Learned from my mistake.
