Can someone 3D print me a part?

Hello group,

I'm in need of a part replacement for a part that no longer exists in the wild. I have the broken pieces. My go to for printing is in the middle of a move so I need to reach out here and see if anyone can help me. I only have two weeks until I leave for Moab, so I'm kind of under time pressure.

The part is a piece from my shifter.

The piece is this small plastic cap that fits on the end of the shifter. It's the one all the way on the left, out of focus. The large plastic one is actually broken as well, but that one isn't causing a problem.

I got a shifter from an older year, but it has a slightly different style, which I had to cut one side to remove. I tried to heat the plastic so it would stay in place once reinstalled, but it didn't last.

Anyway, this is the part. You can see that it is one piece, with three gaps to allow it to be snapped in place. I removed it one too many times and it broke at each of those three relief areas.

I really struggled trying to glue it back together, but nothing I've tried has held.

Can anyone help me with this? I can drive the vehicle to you and take everything apart so we can measure the ring on the transmission that this bushing rides inside, the ball it fits onto, plus the part itself.

I don't think a 3d printed part will stand up to the intended use. My guess someone with a lathe + drill press/mill might need to do the work with nylon.

If you've got a solid model for it, I'll load it into the printer - no guarantees it'll last.

Good suggestion from bradbn4 about having one turned from free nylon or delrin.

Order a piece of delrin and chuck it in a drill and shape it

Or buy that mini lathe

I don?t print Nylon yet and this should be made out of nylon. I can do PLA but at trans temps that would be a bad idea as it would deform.

You could redneck it for now by making a small groove on the outside and using some thin wire. That should last a while. In the meantime take measurements and I can cad you up a nice part you can sent to a shop or an online 3D print or machine service.

I think I can get my guy to model it. That'll be a start. I have some delrin laying around.
Does the transmission get over 350 at the top where the shifter is you think?

now you can print with some of the materials that should last a bit - and there methods like ez-bake the item to increase strength. The last time I tried printing with such materials it nuked my print bed when I tried to remove the part. However; I would say that specific part seemed to be sold and would last...that reminds me, I need to upgrade that printer with a new removable print bed.

PETG might have been the stuff I used because of the lower temp requirement and no need to run the printer into an enclosure.

What is the trans make and model. And rough dimensions
I can print in pla petg and abs but no nylon.

It's an AR5, which shares the same main body as the AX5, R150, and others. I'll have to dig up more info later.

Irv no clue on temp but PLA gets soft in the dishwasher so will not last. ABS? Higher temp and I think it might be oil compatible.

Ive a 2.067" diameter stick of black delrin. Lmk if you need a piece of it.

Right now I have a possible cross brand replacement I'm going to explore.

If you get a model, I’ll try some Nylons I have. I don’t print them much, but with a small pert like that, it won’t take long. I’d probably print three at a time since printing just one would be a hot mess. These materials print at 260C ish.

In the nylons I have 645, PCTPE, and Bridge. PCTPE it’s called a flexible but if you made a solid part like that it would be pretty tough and have some give to it. I also have some poly carbonate and some carbon fiber filled PTG, but I’m assuming those would be too stiff and rigid for this. I think they align would be the way to go. Plus printing spares would be trivial. Though I understand taking apart and putting together is not.

It only needs to be flexible enough to also over the ball. I've got a part on order that might take care of me. If not, I'll be at the mercy of people with skills that I do not possess.

If that's not right, I may know I guy that can help find the correct part for you. That is too new for GM not to have one in stock, somewhere. You may have to pay more than the part is worth for shipping but I know there is one around.

Okay, so I received the part, and it won't work. BUT, I have enough stuff on hand to make it work. This is important as I almost caused my buddy to rear end me on the highway last night searching for gears and the one I found was third. Doh!

Sounds like you need a mini lathe. That could have been fabbed using delrin, in an hourish. With your continual dabbling in different art and mechanical forms. It's something you should consider acquiring

IIRC, Direwolf had a good deal on one, in the TP section.

One of my buddies asked which trans and after a quick Google search, found me the part I needed from a Jeep AX15 transmission. I ordered it in, and the outside diameter was perfect, but the inside was too large and it wouldn't stay on the ball.

If you remember that I broke a gear doing my low gear install, and had to go get a second transfer case to cannibalize. I had that hi-lo shifter laying around and noticed that it had a plastic sleeve on it that looked like would fit the new bushing I got from Core Shifters. I used the hot knife trick again and cut this off the old shifter. Even after cutting it was a bear to get off and back onto the other shifter. Since this very clearly didn't have to slide around or move at all, I just super glued the whole thing together and held it in the vise again.

It was a tight fit, but I got the new bushing over the top and now everything is back to normal. Finally!
