Case in point: this guy I knew who ran a BBQ place in Tidewater occasionally would offer slices of pecan pie made by his wife to regular customers. It wasn't a regular item because the cost was prohibitive. What she did was mix several pounds of ground pecans into the filling... absolutely nobody does that, because who is gonna wanna pay $10 for a slice of pie? Pecans are expensive. Best pie I ever had.
Another example is a pie made from freshly picked raspberries and blackberries... nothing compares to fresh berries... most places use canned pie filling or maybe bulk frozen berries.....
Here's another tip... when making apple pie, don't overspice it, use several types of apple and a few pears, then put turbinado sugar on the top crust.
Homemade pies are best.
