I have been going through the threads but couldn't find any recent one...
I have a Rem 700 SPS that needs to get the barrel threaded.
I have the muzzle device and it will be mounting a Griffin Optimus 9 suppressor.
Who is the current go-to for such a job?

Check with Danger Close Armament they do alot of gun modifications and if they don't do barrel threading they may know a reputable person
Since Birt retired, Fritz at black canyon customs. Used to work for MHSA, IIRC Santa fe and hampden is the rough location I think, been a while. Couple of F-class and benchrest buddies have been happy with his work.

Ended up bringing it to Gunsmith At Large, following the recommendation from Ark Tactical.
Turn around time was great, like 3 days, and they charged $150.
However I now have like 6 MOA shift between suppressed and unsuppressed, so they are taking a second look at it to see why...

Use a borescope and check your baffles.

Aaaaah, muzzle device, nevermind.
I always look through the bore from the chamber and make sure everything looks concentric. Not scientific, but the eye is good at stuff like that, hence peep sights.

Sorry to hear that Lou, wish I was in a position to clean it up for you.
A lot of “Smiths” will get a muzzle concentric ie radial alignment but very few understand axial alignment and fewer work to ensure both are absolutely dead nuts.
It takes so little to do it perfectly.

In your experience, can such a POI shift be somewhat normal/acceptable?
From my reading it seems to be on the extreme end, but not unheard of...
I mean as much as that sucks, hopefully its a repeatable shift. If it is, then now you know how to adjust your dope for suppressed vs unsuppressed. If its NOT repeatable, then yeah, that totally blows and hopefully it can be fixed without having to chop off the threads and then re thread and crowned.... chopping it would be absolute worse case scenario tho, could possibly be fixed in a less obtrusive way.

All right, after bringing the rifle to Fritz I can definitely add those butchers from Gunsmiths at Large to my no go list.
Threads were out of spec, Fritz had to cut the threads off and redo it from scratch.
But hey, what a difference!
Went from 6 MOA elevation shift to no discernible POI shift.
Lesson learned.
