California Mass Shooting- Biased Editing?

When I first read the story this morning about 6:00, it said, "They said there was a man with a machine gun in the area. The shooter, they said, had multiple rounds of ammunition, so that once his ammunition ran out he reloaded, Choi said."

I looked at it again about 7:30 and it had changed to, "They said there was a man with a semiautomatic gun in the area..."

I send an email to one of the writers asking why the change, since they were quoting witnesses and the police have not identified what weapon was used.

I am pretty sure why it was changed- politics. Machine guns are illegal. Semi automatics are a current hot button issue for leftists. Claiming a semi auto was used is likely to stir up more emotional support for the banning of the guns.

I could be wrong and there was new information presented between the times I read the article.

But I doubt it.

In so much of the reporting of these incidents we see the term "high-powered assault rifle" used.

If the bad guys in these incidents used a .22LR AR-based platform (like a S&W M&P 15-22) or a 9mm AR, or any other caliber not generally specific to a rifle round, would they still be referred to as "high-powered"? I get that any time the aesthetics of the firearm are of an AR-type they will always demonize it as an evil "assault rifle" so I want to focus on the "high-powered" aspect of the reporting.

I suspect combining "high-powered" and "assault rifle" will always be used, regardless of the caliber of the firearm - just to create more sensationalism.

This subject drives me nuts.

Any black rifle is "high powered" to the uninformed.

A .223 is not a high power rifle. It is a high velocity rifle, for sure. But 1300 ft-lbs of energy is not what I would consider powerful.

More than a 9mm? Sure. But not too high when it comes to rifle calibers.

On an AR-15 platform, a .50 Beowolf runs 2300-2600 ft-lbs. A .450 Bushmaster around 2400.

An AR-10, which looks the same to most, can be calibered for the .338 Lapua, chucking a Hornady 270gr ELD-X at 2800 fps for 4700 ft-lbs of energy. Now THAT's a "high power" rifle.

Anything, accurate or not, to create fear of firearms, especially EBR's and sensationalize the reporting is fair game to biased media. If they can demonize those of us who own, collect and shoot these platforms, so much the better.

As has been noted the stories change regularly and quickly because the reporters DGARA about accuracy, only clicks and satisfying their bias.

If you're unarmed, you are a victim.

In addition to the above I just hope the shitbag gets his ticket punched real soon. Save everyone involved from a trial and all that brings for the families of the victims.

Much disappointment in the media and political circles as the perp is an asian male age 30-50, and not an age 18-25 incel white male or just an old racist boomer white male.

Giffords Law Center gives CA a #1 rating for its firearm laws along with numerous other organizations.
California is the example of gun control in the nation.
They have laws that prevent something like this from happening in California.

Right now they are at a standstill for the narrative. If the shooter is white then we know how it plays out. If he is black then the story gets squashed. If the shooter is Asian their heads will explode in the media.
Until they can ID the shooter this story will go in circles.
Maybe they already know the race of the shooter and they are formulating the next step.

Just glancing at Twitter, someone stated that this was a domestic violence incident. I'll trust a Twitter member over an official press statement. Press editorials never say we need more armed security. I'll wager it was an Asian guy that got angry at his significant other and went beserk.

Another point regarding the "high powered" designation.

President Biden said that a 9mm will blow a lung clean out of a body. I'm sure some that are ignorant about firearms took that as a fact.

I think we can agree a 9mm is not a "high powered" handgun round. Unless it is fired from a Browning, but that is a "Hi-Power".

I wonder what the press would say if some nutcase did this with an old M1 carbine and several 30 rd mags.....

I was hearing reports on this way before sunrise here in CO this morning. The folks over at nbc, I believe it was, were pushing a VERY heavy and irresponsible "hate crime against asians" even while openly stating that they had no real details or info on perp.

See willie geist reporting on it early this a.m. for affirmation of above. I don't remember who he was talking to from CA (presumably).

Push that preferred narrative at all costs....

Community leader Chester Chong told ABC7 that the owner of the dance studio on West Garvey Avenue was holding an event there on Saturday. Through talking with friends that were in attendance and other local leaders, he said a woman was invited to the event but not her husband, which made him upset. Chong said he believes that woman's husband is the suspect in this case and jealousy may be a possible motive for the shooting.

Schumer and Schiff, of course, blew their loads on Twitter blaming anti-Asian hate and white supremacy.

Maybe it would be better if he used a semi-auto rifle.

Now, the gun banners can point to this one and say, "See! All guns are weapons of mass destruction! Ban them all!"

It will be interesting to see what he used, how many times he reloaded and how many total shots were fired.

In this case, it seems to be more of a cultural snub based on a non-invite to the party and attempt to save face by killing the participants. My thoughts about it being gang based violence may be fanciful.

I am 100% for gun rights but I this shows how 'common place' this crap has become. We jump to the defend gun ownership, find blame for the perp (as we should), but ignore the victims.

I think that sucks. Just my 2 cents worth.

Yes, it does suck, but our hearts have become numb and hardened thanks to the actions of these demented losers. Subsequently, I am tired of being blamed as "part of the problem" in the country and mocked if we do offer sympathies to the victims. Only gun control zealots are allowed to express "true" sympathies.

We can't pass judgement yet, because the whole story isn't out in the open. My understanding is there was a domestic violence incident that occurred before the shooting. Usually, the initial reports are correct. Then come the speculations and opinions, which will distort our view of what really happened. Remember the average American reads at the 7th grade level.

Feel free to correct me if I am wrong.

I started this thread to point out the biased press coverage of the event.

I agree that we have become inured to the atrociousness of these occurrences.

Publicly declaring one's compassion for the bereaved after an event like this can often seem insincere, regardless of one's political leanings.

I think it's a given that almost everyone feels some sympathy for the grieving families.

As .455 says, it does feel that we, legal gun owners and shooting enthusiasts, bear the brunt of the blame for these incidents, and the left desperately wants to appear more compassionate than everyone else, and are willing to shed crocodile tears to achieve their goals.


There is definitely another future thread here worth exploring. Compassion, grief and false sympathies.
