The order, signed by Trump on Monday, says that in order to operate a commercial vehicle, a driver must "read and speak the English language sufficiently to converse with the general public, to understand highway traffic signs and signals in the English language, to respond to official inquiries, and to make entries on reports and records."

On Thursday, autonomous trucking firm Aurora announced it launched commercial service in Texas under its first customers, Uber Freight and Hirschbach Motor Lines, which delivers time- and temperature-sensitive freight. Both companies conducted test runs with Aurora, including safety drivers to monitor the self-driving technology dubbed "Aurora Driver."

Aurora's new commercial service will no longer have safety drivers.

Sad but true, people will die, but progress will still happen. Autonomous driving, especially for commercial/freight, is coming. There is simply too much cost involved with employing drivers for it not to.

Autonomous trucks are most likely going to be way safer than human operators. No distractions, drugs, health conditions, or just plain shitty decisions being made.

Well, stats from Waymo cars in Arizona show that they have an accident rate that is about 1/3 of the accident rate of regular human driven cars.

Back when I took drivers ed back in the 80's we were taught to leave a car length between yourself and the car in front of you. I stay close but with the way people drive around Denver/Boulder you need to leave enough space so that you can bail from a lane where someone is surfing the internet on their phone ahead of you at a stop light.

Waymo restricted their comparison to human benchmarks for their two major operating areas: San Francisco, CA, and Phoenix, AZ.

Very limited trials, in a very limited area.

Nothing like a fleet of smart trucks or cars.

Well that is when you are driving. One car length per every 10 miles per hour.

People today are leaving multiple car lengths while stopped at at stop sign/light.

I think they are doing this, so they can go read their text messages, but for all I know drivers ed is teaching them this *expletive*

If you are stopped at a stop sign/light, snuggle up to the car in front of you. This allows more people to get through the next light cycle, etc. There may be others behind you looking to get in the right or left turn lanes, that you are BLOCKING by leaving a large gap between you and the car in front of you.

Hell no. I was always taught to leave enough room where (in a standard car) you can see 2' of pavement behind the rear tire of the vehicle in front of you. By doing this, unless someone totally smashes into you from behind, you should be able to avoid running into that car if you get rear ended. In CO, it doesn't matter who caused the wreck, if you get pushed into the car in front of you, YOUR insurance has to pay for the car in front of you.

I like to be able to see the tire tread of the vehicle in front of me. Something they taught us at an Air Force driving class. And that was 49 years ago...

Stopping: Come to a complete stop, no forward motion of the vehicle. Do not encroach over the stop line and, crosswalk; keep the vehicle’s wheels pointed straight ahead while stopped, do not turn the wheels until beginning to make the turn and maintain an adequate distance between vehicles (If you can see the rear wheels touching the ground of the vehicle in front of you, you are at an adequate distance).

I was taught 1 car length per 10 mph but if I observe that here in Colorado, some nimrod inevitably inserts himself in between me and the car in front of me so I end up with a half car length.

I took a look today, as I drove up to a person stopped in front of me, and where I would need to stop to see their rear wheels touching the ground, versus where I actually stopped, snuggling up to them, and it looks to me like this wastes at least 10 feet, if not more, per car.

As I know you care very much about the environment, etc., that means fewer cars through the stop sign, just sitting there, idling.

Does it help safety? No, because if you are going to be rear-ended, it does not normally matter where the cars in front of you are.

All this practice achieves, is pissing off other drivers, making them miss the light, and blocking them from the turn lane.

I'll take a stab at this as well.

A small, four door car might have a distance between vehicles of 8' with this rule.

A larger, old truck might have a distance between vehicles of 30'+ with this rule. You can fit another vehicle, and then some, or practically two. Other drivers won't get angry, they'll just think your brand new to a vehicle that's more than 6" above the ground.

Simple height v. viewing angle, etc.

Does the old pickup need further distance between vehicles when stopped at an intersection?

Some people have figured out how to not get upset and get through the light.

Lane filtering. It?s awesome.

Of course some compensating slow a$$ cage drivers ( normally compensating men in 4x4s) get pissed and try to harass riders doing something perfectly legal. Some like to try and get a close to a bike from the rear as possible when the bike moves to the front of the line legally.

It's called situational awareness, something everyone should already be practicing

Having enough space between you and the vehicle in front of you allows room to unass any situation. You've got the front of your vehicle as close as you say. Might as well be a proctologist.

Have both front & rear dash cams in the vehicles just in case someone like you decides to GO! as the light turns green, while the rest of us are waiting for the moron in front to stop texting.

Yeah, in the jungles of Cambodia, you need to be situationaly aware.

Parked at a stop light in Denver, you need to be efficient and considerate.

You need to make sure you, and as many of the drivers behind you, get through the intersection.

If you are scared, do not drive.

Getting through an intersection has more to do with getting on the throttle than the amount of space in front of you. Doesn't do any good if you are on someone's ass and they are looking at their phone.

This is what horns are for.

Ever had a car die in front of you? Have enough room to turn out. The old pickup will need the turning distance to get into another lane safely.
