That's a tough question. If you already have a .223 AR, then you wouldn't need to carry another caliber of ammo if you got the mini.
Of course, AK's are a blast to shoot and are great for SHTF guns as they are so reliable.
AK's although quite reliable are not known for their accuracy. It would be a poor choice for a varmint rifle.
Mini's of old were not as accurate as the newer ones. So if accuracy is a determining factor to use it for varmints, a new Mini-14 Target would be better than an older used Ranch. Although I do have confirmed prairie dog kills at 450 yards with an older mini Ranch.
What would be cool is if they would chamber one in 5.45x39 so you could have cheap ammo.
Just remember, Ruger approved of the 1994 assault weapon ban, and provided funding to the politicians, on the agreement his firearms would be excluded from the ban list.
I'll never own a Ruger.
Why not spend a little extra on an AR-15 and you can get one in 5.45x39 from S&W(to shoot cheap). AR mags are cheaper too. But this is just me, I had a Mini and really did not like it(hated the sights), it was and older ranch model from around 2002. In the end buy what you want.
Ak for sure. No question. Even if it's a wasr10.
This right here makes the choice easy for me. I refuse to ever buy anything Ruger has to offer, no matter how great it is.
Id opt for an AR for a bit more. Or get a Polish Tantel or any AK74 in 5.45x39. 1k rounds is $120 at AIM Surplus. They even have ARs in 5.45x39 and my buddy who has one definalty loves it. Good Luck with your decision[Beer]

The only Ruger I own is a Vaquero .44 mag,,given to me by my deceased father.
Find a good bolt rifle in .223,a Savage maybe,or even a .22mag

AK all the way

Here is what im thinking, Its the first one with the polymer stock the package deal
AK all the way. More fun and stone reliable.
buy an AK, you will probably get better accuracy from a same dollar value AK than you will a mini14.
even get a AK74 and save $$ on the ammo.
go with the ak-47
AK, Just try a bunch of different ammo before you get a large bulk of one type. Mine likes some stuff more than others. Doesn't like the Hollow Point stuff like it munches the others.
The mini 14 is a great rifle, but magazines are a problem. If you can find a deal where you get a couple decent mags for a good price then that is half the battle. The mini is a very reliable weapon, and has a huge array of aftermarket acessories. I use the .223 extensively for my varmint hunting and honestly the 7.62 is too big to be varmint hunting with, and an ak is often too noisy for this purpose as well (they were built with reliability in mind and often have a rattle of some sort and the report from an ak is more pronounced than the mini) and you'll find very quickly that this rifle will be as accurate as you need for your purpose. I highly recomend the mini 14 as do many of the thousands of men that use the same rifle for the same purpose around the country.
Now as far as ruger being for the ban, That was bill ruger and he is no longer in charge of the company, he was a weird guy but designed some of the best firearms for the money that can be found today. Their customer support is top notch and I'm proud to say I have Rugers in my lineup
I dont know if it was mentioned but Arsenal sells a nice AK chambered in .223, since you've got an AR already, go to http://www.k-var.com/shop/ I know they sell one in .223 or www.armarifle.com both of these sites sell a little higher end AK, or you can go the cheaper route also, either way the AK will not let you down.
I love my AK which is chambered for the 7.62x39

Автомат Калашникова!!!
Avtomat Kalashnikova or simply 'AK' Everyone should own one, if you don't it would be top of my list of must haves...
The Mini-14 I had (Ranch rifle) was OK, but not great. I have a buddy who's a police armorer and he didn't have anything very complimentary to say about them. Mine was not good enough to keep over an AR (so I sold it), and even though I don't own an AK if I was choosing between the two I'd probably go with the AK.
As pointed out, both platforms have both pro's, and con's. If you are a serious varmint taker, a bolt gun would be very good. However you are looking to serve two masters, varminter and fun gun. For many people it simply comes down to how much do you want to spend? Taking into consideration; platform, ammo, add on parts, reliability, and of course "The cool factor" There is nothing like a pumped up AK blasting cinder blocks to dust.... Then again that's just my 2 cents.

+1 I do own a 10/22, but I'll never buy another one of their guns.
