Question for Mopar and or Muscle car guys

I am looking at a 70 Challenger that has a "California Replacement Identification Number. There is no fender tag or broadcast sheet.
The car is not #'s matching,dose not have the original engine in it but now has a 440. I was told by the owner that the reason the car now has the Ca rep # is that back in the day the car was used in a robbery and thus the reason for no fender tag or broadcast sheet. I am just trying to figure out if the car is a good buy at 20K? Not looking for a #'s matching collector car but a nice restomod to build on and play with. Just don't want to loose money buying something that was not worth the price paid. Any help would be appreciated.

Depends on what you want it for, seems like it'd be a good daily driver (if its mechanically sound) but I wouldn't buy it as an investment.

No vehicle is a good investment. They usually end up being money pits and you never get back what you put in. Unless you come accross something that can fetch good coin which would be the types of vehicles you see at Barret Jackson.

It really depends. A lot of money has been made on muscle cars, Barret Jackson quality rotisserie restorations and otherwise. '70 Challengers in particular consistently not only retain but increase in value. But, maybe(probably?) not in this particular case, for obvious reasons...

Yeah I agree especially pieced together non numbers matching cars.

Thanks guys. I have seen some repro or restomods go for decent prices especially when someone stuffs a hemi in there. Guess what I am trying to figure out is if it was bought for 20K and I added the 6 pack option (cost me about 3k for everything. Five years from now is the car worth what I have in it at 23K more due to time and market or like my Harley now matter how much I put into it's worth about the base price of what I bought it at.

BTW: Here is the same thing clone not matching #'s just a high dollar restomod and they that 100K sure gets confusing these days!

Sounds like a good plan. Honestly, its hard for me to quantify how much this car might be worth due to its special situation. But $20k isn't bad, the "bad" Challengers (72-74) typically go for roughly that non-numbers matching. Just give her a thorough inspection to make sure its not 40% bondo.

Thanks a piece of me aches for this car because I will NEVER be able to afford a HEMI car or even a numbers matching 440 6 PACK car. You can't buy them for under 50k these days. It was kind of a last ditch effort to have something close to "one real deals" at a common mans price. Betting the farm on it is just a hard thing to do!

Yeah, I understand your situation completely. Just make sure you cover all your bases before you buy it. Definitely get a professional inspection before you buy it. The frustration and heartache that awaits if you buy your dream car for a good deal only to find its a rustbucket under that paint isn't something I wish upon you.

I would find out all you can but my guess is you won't lose money. But you can't know for sure, the tree hugging may completely outlaw older cars some day. It would be a real nice car to fix up and drive, take to car shows, etc.

You Hit the mail on the head right there!!![Bang] Like I have said in my past posts I used to have (at age 16 now 41 so 85'ish) a #s matching 70 Challenger 440 RT/SE that I bought in cherry condition with low miles for $1900 back then. I sold it to a collector who paid me $6500 less than a year later. One of the biggest mistakes in my life!Talk about the fish that got away. One of the biggest regrets in my life was selling that car! Trying to replace that I am not sure is possible But I am trying to come close!!! [Tooth]

I'm not any help with your question, but here's something interesting. One of my best friends in high school used to find decent challenger and charger bodies, and travel all over the state, and surrounding states finding the parts to build them back. He did it for fun, not really to make money. Of course the one he drove full time was awesome. My biggest mistake was not buying one from him. He'd have sold one to me relatively cheap. He would get all excited when he'd find a no rust special challenger like an rt/se. I knew nothing back then except his cars were cool.
