Just a small game licence
I meant license...........duh.
A rifle would be helpful too!
[Stooge]
LOL......he could always throw sharp sticks at em like I do!
Having a property to hunt is the biggie, second a rifle and 3rd some sort of call. If you have a decoy even better so the coyotes concentrate on the decoy while calling instead of you!
Good Luck! They are everywhere right now as they are trying to feed pups. Foxes are out as well.
Pelts are presently in poor condition so they wouldn't be worth saving.
Sweet thanks guys. What does a small game license cost? As far as calls go would i be better off with an electric call or are they just over priced junk? Also one more question what kind of decoy?
No kidding, I blasted two of them in the last three nights trying to raid the henhouse. They usually don't come that close anymore, but this time of year, I'm guessing they're hungry..

Especially after they take a 12 gauge, 3" mag loaded with BB shot from 35-40 feet away[Muaha]...
The devil’s post!
Just sayin...
You know, I hit post 666 a few days back. I wonder if some of my posts were deleted? Mods, did you get mad at me? I really have been good... Honest, really.......
I'm not exactly sure how much just a hunting license costs. I get a combo license and it costs $40.
As far a calls go, it's really a personal preference. Electronic calls have come a long way the last few years and you can get a good one for around $150. The pros of an electronic are you can set it away from you so that the coyote keys in on it rather than on you. Me, I like hand calls. They are pretty cheap and with some practice are easy to use. I learned on a closed reed mouth call. They are generally a little easier to learn to use. With that said, I use mostly open reed calls now because I like the way they sound and they can be manipulated on how high or low you want the pitch of the call to be. Either way be careful. Calling coyotes can become an addiction.

I use a combo of johnny stewart's preymaster 3, and hand/ mouth calls. Have yet to get one, but I will never give up, for some reason they always hang up pretty damn far out, I had been using my 12 ga, but just recently got a 25-06 for the little bastards, that want to hangout 400 yds away, so we shall see.
get info guys thanks again. I will try my luck with a hand call sounds exciting.
I do have one more question. if i want to hunt out of state do i have to do the hunter safety all over again for that state or can i use my colorado one to get the license?
Your Hunter's Safety Card will work in most if not all states. They went through some standardization many years back.
So no, you should never have to take that course again in your life.
If you ever loose your card the Colorado DOW can get you a duplicate as well.
Check out the Foxpro.com website and varmintal.com. Lots of good info and links to other sights.
I started calling from the open back of a 1950s Jeep station wagon in about 1953 using a Weems Wildcall. Once you call in your first, you're hooked. This winter a prime western coyote skin went for $50+. That sounds pretty good until you have tried to skin one...pain in the butt especially when they have fleas jumping from the dead to the closest living...you.[ROFL2]
Good luck on your first! The second gets easier, etc, etc, etc. Still have bad days when they just aren't around, or only smart ones are around.
$50 for a hide? where is that? i could have made enough money for another rifle or two. i can skin one in about 20 minutes, less with practice.
i shot my 39th of the season yesterday. at about 12,400 feet, called it in with a snowshoe hair distress. she was coming in and disappeared below a snowfield, when she did i got ready on a rock. but she never showed, next thing i know she is running away. i tracked her in the crosshairs and when she stopped she got a 60gr sierra at 3000fps right in the shoulder. 192 yds with a carbon 15 with 6x leupold.
for those of you who are going to tell me "their hides are no good right now", i know, and i dont care. shooting coyotes is one of the most wonderful things a guy can do any day of the year. if i killed every coyote i ever saw it wouldnt make a dent in the population. i killed about 16 within a mile of my house since last september, just last thursday i saw 2 while out spraying thistles. that utv needs a rifle rack.
I'm originally from Montana and we raised sheep when I was a kid. (Don't even try with the sheepherder jokes. You'll never come close to what my DI's came up with in basic).
My brothers and I used to make our gas & beer money in HS from shooting coyotes. In the winter it wasn't uncommon to get $150 for a pelt, $50 for ears and tail.
I would really love to get back into poppin' 'yotes.
plus 1 live coyote. Good luck finding that
Hi,
as a long time yote hunter, i can tell you that alot of the electronic calls today are ...well.. over engineered junk. There are a handful that are actualy
good, but agian they sure cost! Most of them rely on the fact that they can
be operated remotely so that you distract the coyotes attention from you.
Trust me, if you move into an area that has not been hunted much, your going to get some success at first, then they are going to wise up and your
going to get skunked. They learn real quick what calls mean bad news... many times they will just go nocturnal on you... and they can see you for MILES...litterally.. if you so much as bat an eyelid while they are coming in
on you they can spook and run...which is why coyote hunting is such an art unto itself. you must become the master of disguise, smell, and shooting hide tactics.. to be successful for the long term. otherwise just go out and try to
blast one now and then and maby get lucky, until they get onto you, or the sound of your vehicle...ect..
as for what you need, well, a colorado small game lisc .. no tags are needed any longer, you can hunt them year round. you can use whatever gun suits your fancy.. anything bigger than a 243 is just rediclous. most use a 220, 204, 223,22-250, 25-06, and a few others that fall in that range. a 22 mag isnt a good choice, coyotes are darn hard to kill, so i wish you much luck out east where its really flat and those suckers can see and smell for miles.
basically a good little mouse squeeker, and a howler are about all you really need, it takes abit of learning of course, but if you learn right you cant carry on conversations with coyotes.. they have a language amongst themselves... be advised that when you start calling, its going to get really busy... every critter in the world will show up to see what all the fuss is about... birds are the worst... and you want to kind of watch out for does, they tend to storm in looking to stomp the crap out of some critter picking on another critter... and if your in the right places...bears and lions can respond...although i dont think you will have that problem out east.
its best to hunt mornings and late afternoons.. or at night.
well i hope this helps.
good luck
