Not that I have any interest in defending islam - which I believe is one of the most abhorant examples of the revolting phenomenon known as religion - but if a mosque near the 9/11 site is "insensitive," one could only call the behavior of western nations in islamic countries ... well, I actually can't think of an adjective sufficiently despicable.
Islam is a "proselytizing" religion, in which its own Prophet advocated the use of the "sword" in their mission. So long as distance and technology limited their ability to project their "sword" beyond the desert, they were "harmless" to our way of life. Well, times they are a-changin'. As such, our "behavior" over there must be dictated by their "behavior" over HERE.
Which came first, the chicken or the egg? I'll not argue that point. It would be an endless circular debate. But, reasonable people, with reasonable leadership should be able to "draw a line in the sand," and say, "NO MORE." But, as I said, Islam has a mission, and that mission is world domination. They will not be reasonable. They will not stop.
Insensitivity has nothing to do with east, west, religious or political conviction, etc.. Basic human decency is the issue. There is no end in history of citing the past. We live in the present. Why incite ill will in the present? Is it wise for the Muslim community to do such a thing?
Muslims are not being "insensitive." They're being "deliberate." This is a premeditated poke in our eye. Yes, one of the "soft-spots" of an open society, is that we can be taken advantage of by our enemies, while they receive the protection of the Constitution.

Is Islam united? Are those building mosques the same as those planting bombs. I seem to recall many missionaries building churches in the name of God to soon be followed by military leaders ridding countries of "savages" also in the name of God. I'd like to think that those building churches back in the days of imperialism were of a different mindset. But, maybe not.. maybe Christian forces were united back then like we seem to be claiming the muslims to be today.
YES, historically, the "sword" has been used, and innumerable atrocities have been committed in the "name of God," or in "Jesus' name." BUT, Christianity is under no textual compulsion to "covert the infidels" at the point of a "sword." Literacy, and non-clergy access to scripture, (which was illegal in the dark and middle ages), has led us to discover that church leaders, Kings, and other politicians deceived Christians, for hundreds of years, into UNSCRIPTURAL crusades, wars, and other deplorable acts.
By contrast, the Koran REQUIRES conversion of the infidels, with the only option being slavery or death. When you hear any Muslim claim to be a "moderate," or that they are a non-proselytizing adherent, ask them if their Prophet was "wrong" or in "error" to require that the entire world be converted to Islam, under penalty of death or slavery?
Just try it, and see what happens.
A quick google of "biblical contradictions" will produce at least one web site with 14 pages of quotes from the bible illustrating them. How do you think christians react to that?
The Bible is replete with contradictions, real and apparent. Some are irreconcilable, but many can be understood given the thousands of years between the various documents, the different types of societies being addressed, language and translation difficulties, etc.
Still, we know, beyond dispute, that New Testament Christianity DOES NOT require, advocate, imply or even hint at armed evangelism. Quite the contrary for Islam. To that point, there is no contradiction.
