Choke size for slugs?

Choke size for slugs?

I've shot a ton of slugs through cylinder bore barrels but I just picked up an 870 with a 21" barrel with Remchoke. I'm going to pick up an improved cylinder or skeet choke for it for sporting clays. Would it be safe to shoot 1 oz. slugs through either of those chokes? (not at clays, of course)

Good question. I wish I knew. I would guess remove the choke.

What does the manufacturer say? On my SG's they are pretty clear about shot vs slugs (and in my case all my SG's support both with no modification).

I'm afraid shooting without the choke would damage the threads in the barrel.

Whatever you do, don't just take out the choke without putting another one in. I've shot slugs through the modified choke on mine. Perhaps just pick up a choke that you know is okay, for the times when you'll use slugs.

Most slug manufacturers and gun makers recommend cylinder or IC for slugs, nothing tighter. I've shot slugs through both and found the IC on Remingtons to be safe and a little more accurate. BTW, the smooth bore 21" rifle sighted Remington 12 gauge barrel I have for my 870 doesn't have remchokes and is permanently IC.

This is the Special Purpose upland model with straight English style stock. It came with one modified Remchoke. I'm going to pick up a skeet or imp. cyl. choke for it (leaning toward the imp. cyl.)

I have an 870 and use IC for slugs.

My 870 will not take a choke. It is just straight up cyl. so I don't worry. Still can powder clays with it though. I was always told to just use a cylinder choke for slugs.
