Is employees. Is it to much to ask that you show up on time? If your going to be late call me before 7:00 am start. Do I really want you if your going to text me "I need a personal day. I will hit it hard tomorrow". Material is going to cost what it is, but employees can make or break a project.

Yeah, I'd spend 20 minutes laying a guy out for the next day. Only to have him not show up.. Glad I don't have to put up with that anymore..

Had 1 that called in 2 hours late because his dog was having puppies and freaked his wife out.
Seeing as how I just retired from the Army I am a stickler for showing up early.
With my new job I am unsupervised and it is all on me to show up to clock in on time.
I usually get to work 20 to 30 minutes early!
For me this is nothing new.
I never want to be rushed unless it is an actual emergency.
Im always thinking ahead for the next day and what may come up.

Early is the only way to go. Unless the company you work for is fucking you every chance they get, then I show up after my breakfast burrito.
I'd be surprised if you couldn't replace an employee in five minutes flat. No reason to keep employees you can't rely on when ten people are ready to take their place.
There are 2 of us in my shop that show up @ 0600 every day. We have morning IT checks that need to get done and it's the same 2 of us EVERY morning. These check cover critical items such as equipment status, online storage utilization, compressing databases, fixing hardware and software that is in a maintenance status, etc. They have to get done to ensure mission integrity.
I've got one co-worker that varies his time in by up to an hour and a half throughout the week. When the two of us who always get there early pre-announce that we'll be late the next day we would expect that the morning checks would be complete by the time we do arrive. Nope. Not even started. It's at this point that I walk away and won't touch the checklist myself. I figure if the boss want's them done, then he can start acting like a boss and insisting that everyone step up to the plate and do the work. As just another employee, I've decided not to babysit these adults and pull their weight too. I find this difficult because of my dedication to the mission, but I've finally realized that it only drags me down to do their share of the work and my assigned tasks fall behind (which I hear about from the boss!).
I start at 6 but am there at the latest by 5.15. Old military habits die hard. My wife needs a job and being ex military has the same old school ideas about being there and on time. has worked for NASA, Quantum and SI international. ;)
I'm lucky, I have guys I have to kick out the door because they'll work without pay if I let them...
Wow Sparky, what a micro managing, slave driving jerk. Your employees clearly need to unionize so they can stand up together against your abuses.
If you normally get there early a delay won't make you late. I never bought into "traffic was heavy", or "I had a flat tire", or "it snowed" excuses. The starting time is the starting time.
While I was down in Kentucky when my mother-in-law passed away, I had the opportunity to see and learn a little about the nearby Amish community.
Lots of folks hire the amish to build and install custom cabinetry in their homes. When they are hired on and they are supposed to start at 0700, they have hammer (or whatever tool they're using) in hand and are swinging it @ 0700. They break for lunch promptly at the pre-identified time for punch, but not a second sooner. They return from lunch or any other break and a working when the clock meets the time they're supposed to be working. They continue working up the the moment that they are supposed to stop. If they feel they didn't give you 100% due to illness or what-have-you, they deduct the percent they feel they were off from their wages they charge you.
Sure, I goof off at work much more than I should, but I was absolutely amazed and totally respected their work ethic. Too bad we don't see even a small amount of that ethic in the rest of society.

You know, funny thing. That's what I thought too, but I saw a few things that totally floored me. Basically (VERY basically) the different Amish tenents are present for just a simpler way of life so that they can commune with their God without the wordly temptations and distractions. There are some Amish "tribes" (for lack of a better term at the moment) who do allow certain technological advances such as phones, to make their lives a little more conveinent and to tell spread their faith and way of living. Amish folks are some of the best people I've ever met, and I've meet a lot of people in my short life, from Aboriginals to true Africans to Russians to Native Indians. Very sincere people. However, I doubt you'll ever find a Amish sect with an Xbox any time soon. lol.Quote:
