Pueblo was reporting a 12yo was shot accidentally. Wonder if it the same incident.
Hope it wasn't a 12 year old. My kids think I'm a bit harsh about safety when we go shooting; I tell them I'd rather hurt their feelings a little and have them remember what to do and not do. I want them to enjoy shooting (which they do) while knowing that all they have to do is let down for a second for something bad to happen.

Nope, thats how I raised my kids with guns. THey sometimes thought that dear ole dad was a bit excessive with the rules and correcting them when they did something unsafe, but they're still alive and now they won't tolerate anyone around them with a firearm not following the same rules.
THe incident that ultimately got Rampart Range closed is a perfect example of this. A guy accidentally shot and killed his friend. While the incident was ruled an "accident" because the gun he had was found to be defective, if the guy had maintained proper muzzle control (not pointing a loaded gun in the direction of another person), his friend would still be alive and well today.
It's easy enough to claim "accident", but being ever vigilent of the possibility of something going wrong by following basic safety rules keeps everyone safe.

I take my boys shooting all the time, went shooting prairie dogs today actually. I also am very vigilant with the rules. Either on the way shooting or when we first get there we always review the rules of firearm safety.
made my kids memorize the rules and demonstrate them before ever stepping on a range,
we are heading out tomorrow, will review them before we leave.
very sad.

I've been working with my son in the backyard with a Nerf rifle working on safety and shooting with him. He is only five and so scatterbrained that I wouldn't trust him with a BB gun yet. I was encouraged today though. He had made his three year old sister a Lego "gun" and was telling her about muzzle discipline and trigger finger control.
Was the same kid.
