In this case, I think the problem is 'zero tolerance' policies. The idea that people directly involved are unable to reach the correct decision, and are required (by School District policy; or by State law; or Federal law) to impose a sentence without regard for the facts implies that legislators can divine all possible scenarios.
I'm no fan of common sense, it's often wrong.

I once heard it said that "Common sense is an uncommon virtue".
I think common sense is the actual useful application of intelligence. Not to be confused with "Common sense gun laws"...
What I find absolutely preposterous is that school officials even claim the right to search a students vehicle that is NOT parked on school grounds in the "interest of student safety".
In doing so, if they find so much as a plastic knife, the student can be expelled.
While I understand that this is not the case in this situation, it happens all of the time and, at least to me, seems a flat out violation of the Fourth Amendment.
zero tolerance policies in schools boil down to lazy administrators.
they have tenure, and summers off, and a huge chip on their shoulder from their perceived hardships of their job.
the worst part is, at least when I was in school (which has been a while ago now), the zero tolerance stuff was not universal. it was applied selectively and unfairly.
school administrators are a mix of college professor, washington politician, chicago cop, and ship's captain.
they are in charge, they are always right, what they say goes and woe unto anyone that challenges their authority.
That's what happen when we allow the libs control the education system.

i remember here in new york i use to bring my rifle to school because i had a nra shoot after school-which the school sponsored-and use to keep it locked up in the principals office
nowadays here even if you draw a gun on a piece of paper it can be a cause for expulsion!!!
