I'm gonna make some prarie rats die this week and was wondering what the best ammo is for game. I think the 3rd turkey season is in as well and wouldnt mind taking one with the 17. I've got Hornady 17gr ballistic tip, and 17gr FMJ. which is gonna make'm die faster? Maybe this should be in the hunting forum???
I got a .17, and use cci tnt ammo, if you need some help let me know, I would greatiously pay for your ammo, with the ability of me being able to shoot p-dawgs
I think a have a few boxes of that as well. Will it penetrate a turkey though? I'm doing the shooting in Kansas. Not too many people are willing to make the drive. I do know a guy in Limon though...Maybe one day over the Holliday break, we can go do some killing.[Beer]Quote:

Savage with bull barrel and accu-trigger. Shitty synthetic stock, shitty glass, Harris bi-pod. Looks ok, shoots great.
Damnit.. 17gr TNT jacketed hollow points dont do a damn thing to a body shot on a turkey! The p-daws hate them though.
At what range did you shoot it.
First attempt was 85yds, second was 120yrds. Both jumped a flapped wings, but not hurt at all. Oh, well. The 12g worked just fine! I guess it was just shot placement. I was attempting an upper body shot in the vitals and away from the breast, but I'm not sure where they actually got hit. Maybe try the FMJ's next time.
the .17HMRs really lack penetration power... the FMJs are better, but the bullets are so light, they just slow too quickly..
I did get a pass-through on a P-dawg using fmj... was my first shot with .17HMR at a live target, he just tipped over and landed on the ground.
inspected the target, and it went right through his neck- not much tissue there, tho... I think to take out a turkey, you'd have to get a head shot.[Luck]
Yes, on rimfirecentral.com Ive read of people taking coyotes with 17hmr but I think with 17hmr its all about shot placement.With 17grn there is not much room for error.
So you shot a turkey with a rifle and it didn't get hurt? That is crazy.
for what it's worth, I've seen the hollow point .17HMR rounds fragment on a leaf... doesn't take much for them to come apart- so if they hit a feather, then it would be tiny fragments that would enter the turkey...Quote:

Before you think about taking a Colorado Turkey, I think you should check the regs on method of take. It has to be a certain caliber and I don't leagaly you can use a rifle??
