I bought Marlin's old FAL last weekend and one of the first things I want to do is refinish it.
So: Classic matte black (satin also an option), desert tan (or coyote brown), or some grey cammo type deal (urban marpat, perhaps)?
OD green and standard woodland cammo are less prefered but options I guess.
Go Urban.

You know, You can get a couple of sets of funiture, paint them all differant, then just go with what You feel.
Even mix and match. :lol:
I was thinking of doing the whole rifle in whatever pattern.
Got any good how-to links on refinishing? I'm curious what kind of surface prep there is, wether I should sand off all the old stuff or just apply over it.
I'd suggest going ahead and stripping it all down, and making sure that it is very clean before You paint. The paint will stick better and last longer.

I've always been fond of a camo pattern in neon colors. maybe I'll do an AK like that. :)

I can't imagine the Rhodesian slopped on camo colors wouldn't be right at home on the open plains and front range.

oddly, tan is losing.
Black looks good.... but it's so..... common.
Just like a Harley looks good black, but if you see one with a really good unique paint job, it looks so much better. That's what I want.

Well I tend to like the Dark Earth and Coyote over most other colors, but I still dig OD. Here is mine in Allumahyde II ODed furniture.

Thanks to some nice folks on falfiles, I found out that large portions (if not all) of my rifle are Aussie made, and originally sold to Bermuda.
So I came up with some Bermuda Cammo:

I just got it all back together. I don't have the camera, though, so pics will have to wait.
I do need to touch up some stuff that got scratched on reassembly, but it looks pretty good overall.
ETA: no leftover or missing parts, thanks to my labeling system: labeled parts with scotch tape and a sharpie, then covered with masking tape. This helps keep small pins from disappearing and when the masking tape comes off, the scotch tape is still readable.
