Need help in understanding this -

I guess I'm really getting quite old as I have one hell of a time understanding their wording when someone selling a firearm, they list it showing the model and then the words " New in the Box".

Then their ad indicates that they have fired the firearm maybe thirty or forty times. Was surely new in the box when they purchased it but after being fired a few times,(the way I see it) it is no longer NEW in the BOX. I am seeing more and more ads like this. I'd think it'd be more accurate so say "LIKE new in the box".
Please help this old guy to understand this.

I am NOT singling anyone out here. This is meant to be just an general question as this happens a lot lately!! THANKS!

Yes Sir,
NIB should indicate never fired by the owner, other than factory fired for functional/accuracy purposes.
LNIB should be used to describe a firearm that has been fired only for a few rounds and in a from the factory condition. No idiot marks or or blemishes in the finish, and very carefully disassembled/reassembled for a detailed cleaning.
I see the same thing in a lot of ads from noobsters.

ATTENTION to all NOOBS, if it has been fired, it is NOT New In Box !!!

Buyer beware, I ignore those and inspect the firearms as if I was to inspect any other purchases, new or used.

Even when I have an unfired gun for sale that is unfired in the box I try to always call it "used but unfired" or "previously owned but unfired and like new" or something similar.

I'm with you. I really get irritated when I see a used gun advertised as new.

I actually prefer buying used because of the potential savings...but call the damn thing used.

Amen brother. Inspect it as you would a used car. I try to be severely critical in my descriptions of condition. Generally I like to think I am correct. But some of these guys get a bit carried away with their assessment of things... And their "values" of the guns are getting pretty fucking silly too... I saw a guy selling a Century VZ58 clone for $950 a couple weeks ago. These people are smoking crack out there....

+1 on the NIB (new unfired) LNIB (fired but low count good condition)

+5 on some owners smoking crack, gun values being new or better.

I could be wrong but even if its NIB the owner should understand that they are going to have to take a bit off the top to sell.

Good to see that the membership (so far) has agreed with me on this one.
Sometime in the near future, I'll be attempting to sell my Norinco UNFIRED SKS. I bought this gun brand new almost 20 years ago and have never fired it. Although I don't have the box for it anymore, I'll probably list it as "LIKE new - unfired" to keep things more accurate. It is kinda different to buy a firearm new and not shoot in almost 20 years. Hell, even if I do eventually fire just one round from it, it probably won't be depreciating THAT much anyhow. At least if I do get one or two shots off, I'll be confident that it does function OK. Kinda reminds me of someone buying a brand new unfired (except at the factory) pistol to be their CCW weapon and never even firing it to determine that it will function as it should if it is drawn.

^^^ Mazin's right! A little trick I learned early in life, open the bolt and or action and stick your pinky finger in the chamber! I don't care how they may have cleaned it. But 9 times out of 10 I get black powder residue on my finger and call the bluff. Less money, been fired end of story.[Tooth]

for the NIBs I would add a stipulation into the sale
"Before I buy this can we take it to my Gunsmith? I will pay for the inspection charge. I Just want to make sure its safe and sound and in condition as advertised."

I won't mention names or anything... But I threw that out there and I suddenly felt like a priest in a confessional.

I declined the sale and we agreed to just go our separate ways.

They are few and far between. I will say that if you know all the details....

A few weeks ago I could have sold a 1996 Ruger P95 NIB. A coworker had bought it and loaded 10 rounds in the mag.

It was made mine after he passed and in looking at the gun I thought that it had not been shot. in looking at the gun it still had all the stickers on the mags, all the paperwork and the lock. and taking a good look at the feed ramp/chamber/slide I concluded that he never fired it. I took the 95 dated ammo out of the mag putting it back in the box to make the 50 that he had bought for it for $8.49.

Last week I broke its cherry. I fired the original 50 rounds he bought for it. It will never leave this house until I pass. It may not be a gun that I would have bought but after 20 years Wayne's gun got to make noise. :)

the Ruger P Series are probably the most under rated weapons I have fired.
They aren't Tacticool or light.
I wouldn't recommend it as a daily carry under light clothing.
I have owned 2 now and I love them both
Reliable and accurate.
and if all else fails, they make a nice hammer.

That's how I feel about the S&W 3rd Gen semi-autos. Awesome guns...as long as you don't have to carry one around.

the way i see it , if its fired its not new and should never be considered new . maybe you should sell them some boots .

and yes the ruger p sires is very under rated firearm , owned a few and were all a blast to shoot (no pun intended).

It a black and white issue. It is either new or if fired, used.

Bailey Guns I also like 3rd generation S&Ws. Need more of them.

Yeah, me too. A few years ago you could buy them for chump change. Now I think lots of guys have caught on to how reliable and durable they are. They've gone way up in price and they're getting harder and harder to find for a reasonable price.

I have a 4506 and 4505. I'd like to pick up a 5906 or 5904, too.

They do happen but are deeply rare. Some years ago there some Lee Enfield No 4 Mk2's that had been made and never used. They were wrapped in some grease. I couldn't resist and opened it and it is a nice shooter. If I had left it in the wrap it would be worth some serious bucks now.

There have seen guns that looked unissued and maybe they were but until there is proof of such the best I could honestly say is 'appear unissued'.

I agree NIB should mean no rounds thought it and not handled much meaning no dings, marring, scratches etc.

LNIB should mean still in excellent condition and well cared for but has miles.

Thats why when I purchase from the original owner and he claims NIB and I happen to sell it without firing myself. (Yes I have bought and sold a couple of firearms without firing them). I always make it clear that the previous owner "CLAIMS" no rounds fired and I have not put any down the tube myself.

When you're dealing with people in the know I have found honesty is always truely the best policy. It's just too bad that the majority of today's population have no idea what that means.

ANIB - As New in Box - dealer only claim about a gun that the dealer bought back from the original owner and dealer unequivocally knows it is unfired

LNIB - An unfired weapon being offered for sale by the first owner

They were not 50 but the two Bulgy Maks I bought were that way. Original boxes, two matching mags, packed in cosmo and not a mark on them. Kit wise there were some of the early FAL STG kits that were like new and some of the Romy AK kits looked like they had never been played with much. I had one of the early kits that I could not find a mark on the bolt or carrier.[Beer]
