Hi and thanks from another noob

Found (and bookmarked) the dealer&range reviews page last year, and have been coming back/reading more lately. Many thanks for all the great info!

No AR here... can I still play if I don't plan on getting one? :roll:

Have an oldish Ruger .357, been shooting more lately since a friend got a Sig 229. Planning to get an auto pistol for my wife soon, and probably a Mossberg/Maverick 12g after that, or maybe an 870. Just got an Uncle Mike's ambidextrous hip holster for the magnum today at Sportsman's (I'm wrong-handed), along w/ some ammo and targets.

Heh... my buddy w/ the Sig wants an AR bad.

On that note -- the only "long guns" I've ever fired were RWS pellet rifles years ago, and only .177 at that. Ok stop laughing. They never felt right b/c I want to shoot lefty, but I'm right eye dominant. I've heard two schools of thought on this: either retrain the left eye (pitb), or learn to shoot righty.

Suggestions? Like I said I don't expect to have a rifle soon, but I figure I might as well work on it when we get the shotgun (hopefully this summer). Oh and sorry if that topic's been covered, I didn't search yet.

I'd learn to shoot righty.

I'm not a southpaw but both my parents are and my ex wife is. My dad was left eye dominant but my ex was right eye. She would cock her head to the side when holding a pistol and aim with the right eye.

From both parental and other experience with lefthanded people in a righthanded world, it's usually just easier to do things righhanded.

I think I've heard some studies show that left handed people have a generally easier time being ambidextr-- ambidexter-- using both hands or switching to righthanded than righthanded people have doing things lefthanded.

And from experience with my dad (born crosseyed, now eyes point at an outword angle) and a girl my mom babysat when I was growing up (lazy eye), retraining your eyes can take years and years of work with an eyepatch and generally only 'sticks' if you start young enough.

Besides, like a lot of things, guns tend to come mostly righthanded and the ones that are lefty tend to be more expensive.

Thanks, yeah that's what I figured. Been adapting to a righty world all my life so no sweat. I've heard that thing about it being easier for us too, and experience bears that out. Drove in the UK a few times and it's always easier for me than the rest of my family. Fun actually... :cool:

Welcome aboard.. there are a few of the bigger AR manufacturers (DPMS and RRA come to mind) who are starting to make lefties in decent production runs. So you've got some hope. You can always use a brass catcher too if that helps.

Don't worry we've got enough AR's and a variety of folks and their respective shooting styles to help you get the right rifle for you and teach you how to join us on the dark side!

There's a slim chance I'll crash the off-month Northside shoot this weekend up at 7/72. Currently have a few diff types of ammo for the magnum... if I can make it, what other calibers should I bring? :twisted:

Hi Chris, note that I have only gotten possibles for 7 & 72 on Sunday the 16th, so that's when I'm going to be there.
I'm bringing a 9mm pistol and my AR (5.56) so that's what ammo you'd need (I'll spot you a mag of each and let you shoot all the 22 you care to).
I plan to get there 9:30 or 10:00 Sunday.

After Sunday's shoot I'm not sure I'll bother looking for lefty stuff, felt ok doing it all right-handed. Appreciate the info though!

And apparently, resistance is futile.

Somehow the shotgun idea has dropped a step or two on the priority list.

Get this-- my wife even said that after we've got her pistol (top of said list), we should get a rifle next. An assault-type rifle, something with good sized mag's available.

My wife is a lefty and we're working on training her to shoot righty. I am a righty and am left eye dominant, so I'm trying to learn to shoot center with both eyes open. Not as easy as I thought it'd be....

Shooting with Both eyes open is really the best way to do it anyway. Does take some work, but you'll appreciate the results.

I'll try using both eyes next time I have a chance.

The rifle itch is getting bad... :twisted:
