What do you say to this?

So last night I went and picked up this girl that I've been seeing for about a week now, and told her about my little misadventure when I went shooting up at Squaw pass and locked the keys in my brother's jeep. She then came back and asked: "So all this shooting you do, what do you shoot? I hope it's not animals." I shot back with, no, not yet, I don't have my hunter's safety card of license yet, but will soon when I get my bolt-gun and take the $10 class. She didn't seem too amused by the fact that I'm getting into hunting (albeit 26 is kind of an older age that I would like). What do you say to someone who you are interested in, but can't understand or approve of your lifestyle and interests?

Damn, all I got out of that is 26 is to old for you...man what I would do for a 26 year old...!![Help]


Seriously, the vast majority here are gonna say "dump the bitch" "she's not worth it"... Its up to you, if you think you really like this gal then try and bring her out shooting with you and help her learn about guns and shooting and maybe she will understand your appreciation for firearms. I'm sure your not out shooting animals just for fun, like dogs and cats, but an animal for a food source like dear or elk, so explain that to her.

agreed, and i figure if it's meant to be, then even if she doesn't like hunting, it won't be an issue. my lady and I have things that we both don't like, any that's ok, we have our own interests

I meant to say 26 is older than I wanted to be when I start getting into hunting. But better late than never.
And she seems like the type that has been lied to about what shooting is all about and what shooters are like. She did say that her dog was shot by someone (not sure who, be it a hunter, shooter, idiot, kids, whatever) when she was 8 and has been biased since. I tried to explain to her, but the conversation was quickly steered in a different direction after a short while. I'll try to get her to come shooting with me and assess from there, otherwise I've got a couple others on the back burner I could go after and just let this one slip into the friends/acquaintances category.

Agreed, people that are uninformed or just haven't been around guns automatically assume that we live in a lean to in the forest. Just educate her, let her know that gun owners are responsible, sane, fun etc and its a hobby just like anything else when it boils down.

Id say if you want her around guns, keep it to just you, MAYBE one other person she is real comfortable around. Go up from there. A range/shop will make her very uncomfortable. Think of you shopping for lingerie, for you, with a bunch of very excited women. Not the comfort zone (Id assume here!)

You didnt mention vegeterian, so she's probably eating dead animals now. So just explain that you're keeping another cow alive!

^^^^^ I had a GF like this. I talked her in to going shooting with me to National Forest. Theres no preasure there, if she want's to ok. I took my Ruger 10-22 out showed her the doo's and dont's. She was scared at first but when she started hittin the cans I thought she was going to piss her self. She could'nt put the rifle down.

IMHO, see if you can make her see the error of her ways first. If you can't, I'd say lose her on principle, but I'm an asshole. Alas, women who appreciate such things are all too rare in today's (alleged) society.

Explain to her that you're hunting to harvest the animal and it's meat, not just a trophy. and that hunting provides a needed resource management aspect - that if you didn't kill the animal it would most likely die a lonely, horrible death due to starvation because of under/overpopulation.

If she doesn't get that, serve her some elk steak some night. It's mighty tasty.

Everyone here makes valid points... I'll see where this goes, maybe take her shooting with me, but definitely serve up some elk sometime and prove that PETA is correct (that's People Eating Tasty Animals).

it is a fine line you are walking, plenty of women and men will say what they have to, to get you hooked and married. after the fact they will try and change you into something else. I am not saying everyone, but I would make sure she is on board thru education of her by you, before you find out the hard way. it can get ugly later on, and you can and will loose alot. I know, and I am sure plenty others here know also.

This, it has been my experience over the years that girls no matter how against guns change that opinion real fast once they pull the trigger. Have yet to fail at winning one over yet.

Tell her there is absolutely nothing wrong with eating things with faces...and then show her. [Muaha]

FWIW - i had a girlfriend in college that was really pissed at me when i bought a handgun. She had not interest in shooting. I did not push it. I would go shoot (1-2x) and then she was around when I cleaned it. Just before she was sure that the relationship was over, I asked her to pick up the parts while the gun was in pieces. She picked up the parts and quickly started asking how it worked. Slide off frame and barrel in slide she began to see the mechanism. Another time or two she commented that the gun was merely a tool and realized that if the operator pulled the trigger it would fire, and if not then it would not just fire by itself. THE LESSON - EDUCATION. SHe learned not to be scared because she understood the mechanism. This is not different that learning to drive or doing anything for the first time - take it slow and easy, don't push or she will resist.

The following weekend, we went to the range, found a quite place with just hte the two of us. I did not want others around as she would be nervous and ditracted. I wanted her to focus on what we were doing. She shot the gun and promptly went though 200+ rounds with a perma grin on her face. To this day, she does not hunt and does not want. SHe is ok with hunting as she understands where meat comes from. (Once met a woman in the grocery store that shought meat come from the store, she had no idea it was from a cow and was equally appauled and crying when she learned that lactating cows produce milk - uneducated)

Moral of the story - education is everything, but some people wil learn and not like what they learn, while others will ike it. Needless to say, I married the college girlfriend and over twenty years later she still pushed me out of the way to get to the firing line first.

Whether your girl will shoot or not is not the issue. If she is willing to learn and respect your choices that it was matters. Don't push her to do it. And for god sake if she does don't be an ass and get her behind a 12 gauge or a hand cannon. Seriously go with the 22lr if you can. Also, use a handgun that fits her so the recoil travels into her wrist and forearm correctly and does not bend her wrist to the side. Remember, her first ecperience will dictate the learning curve and if it hurts or is painful, she will continue or develop a negative image. My wife started with the 22lr pistol and now she shoots a 12 gauge and 44 mag. Oh, she is 120 lbs and 5'4" too.

If you like her at least try to educate her and give her a chance to learn what it is about. My wife wasn't around hunting or shooting at all and now goes with me and hates libtards and illegals! You just have to show them the light

I agree with legaleagle about starting a female out on a 22 then move up. Started my wife on a p22 and it gave her the shooting bug ever since. Also dont be the big tough guy when training a girl! Speak soft and be calm! She will learn better and you will earn brownie pointss for it.

Honestly I probably wouldn't do anything yet. If it's only a week into the relationship then throw the hunting conversation on the back burner. She's not questioning the guns/shooting part of it as much as the hunting itself, right?

If she can't understand why you even want to shoot something then someone suggested above cleaning your gun in front of her and having her hand you parts of it and see what happens. That's an incredible idea and I think that would work wonders.

Right now it's just too damn early to give a second thought to it IMHO.

My wife told me she wanted to go hunting with me this year...she then told me she's be crying the whole time she squeezed the trigger. We've decided...maybe next year. [Coffee]
