A Plea

Please please please, lock your houses, cars, garages, and doors from your garage to your house. Please remove or hide all items inside your car that look to be valuable. And please take your keys out of your car and lock your car even if it's in your garage. And lastly, if you are having a chat with a neighbor, help us out and remind them to do the same.

I don't care how nice your neighborhood is crime still happens there. In fact, being a smart criminal, why would I go to crappy areas and steel from them when I can go to nice areas and get better stuff without actually having to beak into anything.

The next time I hear, "Yeah Officer, but nothing ever happens here," right after their house or their neighbor's house was burglarized because "nothing ever happens" I am going to snap.

I went out of town for a few months and took every firearm I own and all the ammo with me. Not that I have a great deal of either but was not about to leave it here.

I'm also sure that most people on here probably already take my advice, being that we all seem to have some level of paranoia (not that it's a bad thing) but tell your neighbors and tell them how stupid they are, since I really can't.

I had my car stereo stolen this week. It was my fault. I left the window open. Why did I? Because I rescued a drunk friend from walking 4 miles home. He thanked me by puking in my car. I was trying to air the car out. But.... it is what it is. It was a crap stereo, but meth heads don't care. I am just glad they did not tear the center console up too much. Now I need another crap stereo. lol

So yea.... stuff happens.

I live on the east side of Sodom and Aurora. I never lock my car, as there is nothing of value in it, and I don't wanna have to pay for a window. If they steal the radio (notice I didn't say stereo [LOL]), they deserve the ass kicking they receive when they try to fence that POS...

What's funny about that is I have close friends that live in Centennial, literally across the street from Aurora. I have heard them say, "Nothing happens here" as if this community is no where near Aurora.

I live in Aurora and have lived in major cities so I look at things differently. I don't think I live in a bad neighborhood and things rarely happen around me, but things happen everywhere

I actually made a YouTube video about this very topic around last Christmas. A fatal mistake a lot of people make around the holiday time is they shop at multiple stores, often purchasing high-ticket items, put them in the back of the fancy SUV, then go to the mall to finish up shopping - leaving their vehicle parked for an hour or two with all that new stuff just advertising "PLEASE STEAL ME" all over it. I walk by people's cars all the time and glance in...seeing iPods, iPhones, laptops, navigation systems, etc. left in plain view. The navigation systems bother me the most. Someone steals that, now they have your home address and the addresses of anyone you stored in that thing, so now they have a shopping list on where to go. I always say, "Have faith in God, but lock your doors". Thank you for posting this Kev, it's always a good reminder!

Send the video my way, if you don't mind. I am attempting to make a new friendly LE pamphlet for citizens in my city. Currently we have a little card that more or less looks like a ticket and people are confused when we leave them at their house, in their garage, or on their car. I am trying to come up with a positive looking way to help people realize the dangers.

Often in the middle of the night I find many open garages. I always check to see if I see anything out of the ordinary such as open cars that appear to have been gone through, etc. Often I will leave a note but sometimes I will come across something odd or keys in a car so I feel the need to wake home owners. Thus far I haven't had any negative feedback from doing so.

Also, that's a good reminder. During the holidays I have seen people store presents in their cars to hide them from kids, etc. This is very inviting to thieves and I take a lot of reports for this type of stuff in the winter.

I one of the paranoid ones that leaves nothing in the car and make sure I lock it at ALL times.

Me too. I did actually leave a worthless cord in my truck once and my truck got broken into and the cord stolen. I am guessing the thief thought it was for an MP3 device. I have free window coverage on my truck so it didn't cost me anything for the fix, it was just really inconvenient.

You guys actually go out on these calls? In Colorado springs unless someone has a gunshot wound they wont even send an officer out, even then its 50/50. You should move down here then you wouldnt have to hear anyone bitch, its all done online.

I'd rather people not be stupid, when all else fails the sign would be just funny.

Always lock up the house good and tight.

As for the vehicle, I drive a soft top Jeep with no doors most of the time. I just make sure that whatever is in there I am prepared to lose/replace. In the winter I don't lock my doors on it because thieves are idiots and will cut the windows out instead of just unzipping them. I know the risks, but I'm not going to stop driviing what I love to drive, so I deal with it.

Sorry had to say it, it happens to me all the time- completely unrelated to the theft warning, but on the same note as no good deed goes unpunished (sorry to hijack a bit) I set a friend up with a girl a while back and he just proposed to her last week... why the no good deed reference? Because I've been single for going on 3 fawking years! So I'm living proof.
Back to the topic at hand- I had my motorcycle stolen about 5 years ago outside of my apartment in what I thought was a pretty nice area of Arvada (thought wrong), real bad thing was, the next week I was going to go buy a 2-way alarm for it -and always had my Glock .40 in easy to reach location inside my apartment so a crime would have been prevented if the assholes just waited a week til I got paid.

Also need to mention how easy identity theft is... Car registration, insurance, etc. Lots of thirds these days are plugged in... A broken into car isn't always about a fancy stereo.

yep my wife and her co-worker/friend were at the park walking their dogs off 104th near highway 85. parked right off 104th in the parking lot, middle of the day, lots of people around. windows up, purses left in the car but they covered them up.

someone broke the rear window, stole the friends purse, left my wifes even though it was in the front seat.

within 30 minutes they had filled 2 vehicles, bought 2 $500 gift cards at walgreens, 1 $300 gift card and were gone (2 stores). they must have known the stores because they parked away from any cameras to avoid plates.

they got face shots of the people but the cops have done nothing for them and said they really couldn't do much for them.
The friend called the card companies right away and got everything cancelled but in that short time they did some quick damage but the CC company covered it all. Just sucks because she lost all her stuff, recently married and had a few gift cards left over for places to buy wedding gifts and then had to replace the window on top of it.

biggest thing that blows my mind is that walgreens corporate policy says no purchases over $300 without ID, her CC said "see ID" on it, and the same card was used almost back to back at the same store, then again at another one.

There is no difference between paranoia and prudence. They are simply different ends of the same spectrum. Depending on your circumstances, you will always fall somewhere in between.

even locking up wont stop a thief....couple of years ago someone broke into my house while me and my fat fuck dog slept through it.....broke in through a locked garage door window then through a locked door into the kitchen....stole a laptop camera etc....more recently our shop has had 4 SECURITY CAMERAS stolen over the last couple of months....who does that????
