BAILEY - At least four schools are in lockdown after a gunman, claiming to have a bomb, took an unknown number of people hostage inside Platte Canyon High School.

The Jefferson County Bomb Squad and SWAT teams have been sent to Platte County High School in Bailey. 9NEWS September 27, 2006.

Around noon, the Jefferson County Sheriff's Department sent its bomb squad and its SWAT unit to the school after reports of possible gun fire inside the school. Park County requested JeffCo assistance.

Park County Sheriff's Department has confirmed there is one man, with a gun, inside the school. He has claimed to have a bomb. They have also confirmed he has a female hostage. They are also reporting that there are no known injuries at this point.

Reportedly the Park County Sheriff says they received a 911 call from the man inside the school telling them he had the hostage. Law enforcement officers are moving through the evacuated buildings searching for any people left inside and trying to assess the situation.

Platte Canyon High School has been evacuated and both sides of highway 285 have been closed to facilitate the evacuations between mile markers 218 and 222.

Four Jefferson County schools and at least one Park County school are in lockdown.

The schools in Jefferson County are: Conifer High School, West Jefferson Middle School, West Jefferson Elementary School and Elk Creek Elementary School.

Fitzsimmons Middle School has been locked down in Park County.

The school districts are not releasing any information about where evacuated students are being taken. There is no information on what parents, with students in the affected schools, should do at this point. 9NEWS will provide details for parents as soon as we receive them.

Sky9 is on-route to the scene and 9NEWS and 9NEWS.com will continue to update this story as more details become available.

Park Co received 911 call from the gunman saying he was holding a hostage. Police are searching the evacuated building to clear it.

Proven: The gunman was not legally able to purchase firearms

Today's Denver Post backs up my suspicions. The perpetrator in Bailey was not legally able to own firearms.

Guess that's why he had no problem taking firearms into a "gun free" zone.

"Morrison was arrested in Aurora in 1973 for larceny and possession of marijuana, according to a CBI database. He was also charged with obstructing a police officer July 11 in Littleton for obstructing a police officer, the CBI records say. That case was pending."

I do have to wonder what the "obstucting a police officer" charge is about. That sounds like a consolation prize the department takes when the perp did something else but charges weren't going to be pressed.

Yet another case of Denver-area police having someone in hand shortly before they commit a horrible crime.

From what is known today it sounds like the cops on the scene in Bailey were doing the best they could. I do not fault them. I do fault the "justice system" that lets guys like this wander off to go commit more serious crimes.

What was he caught doing when he was "osbtructing an officer"?

How many times was he caught when Bill Ritter was DA and never prosecuted?

I find it hard to believe he was Mr. Upstanding Citizen between 1973 and lately.

Last night I saw some of the news reports and one station was talking to this guy's neighbors at the hotel or wherever he was staying at. They were saying something like, "Yeah, and he had a lot of GUNS." "Boy, he sure liked his GUNS." The media of course focused on that and spun and towed the same old line that all gunowners are wackos. It's subtle propaganda but it's been effective for decades.

Alot of you guys have alot of guns. Hell I'd trust Steve and Mary to be around my kids and they have alot of guns. You won't see the news talking about the 100s of thousands of people that own alot of guns, and are fine upsatnding people. But they'll beat the horse about the anomaly, bad guy that has lots of guns and does something like this.

I just read on one of my sweepstakes forums, a lady calling for stricter control on hand guns and automatic weapons because of The Bailey shooting. I pointed out in my gentle way, that schools are open season because guns are not allowed, the guy wasn't legally able to own a gun, and mentioned that an automatic weapon has never been used in a school shooting.

When someone starts throwing stuff into the equation that has nothing to do with what's going on it really pisses me off. The Columbine shooting was done with shotguns and 9mm handguns. The shooting in Canada a few weeks ago was done with a pistol caliber carbine. The shooting in Bailey was done with a .357 revolver and a Glock. The kid that shot the principal in Wisconsin used a .22 handgun. He had a shotgun with him when he walked in but it was taken away from him without a shot fired. The guy that killed the Amish kids used a shotgun and a handgun. Do you see a trend here? No one was using evil "assault rifles" in these shootings.
