Condition 1 Carry?

How do you carry, and why? I just think that condition 1 [C1] is scary… I have heard it said “Never trust something mechanical”. Well in C1 carry the only safety on the CZ 75B SA is the mechanical safety. Those do fail. Right?

I have read that it takes too long to go from C3 to ‘ready’ but with practice… is that too much? I know that those who do carry C1 will argue against those who prefer C3. I know some guns have more than one safety, but the CZ 75B SA does not! I might be more inclined to carry C1 if the gun had a second safety, like a 'grip' safety.

I know LEOs carry C1 with other brand guns. Any LEOs carry CZs?

Any AD with C1 carry? Have you been carrying 'forever' C1 with out problems?

If you've got a CZ-75B then it should have a block on the firing pin as well as the manual safety. If you don't pull the trigger then the gun won't go off. A lot of modern guns have internal safeties in addition to the external safeties. If you have a good holster for your gun then you shouldn't worry about the trigger accidently getting depressed. If you should happen to drop the gun on accident just remember to let it fall. Don't try to catch it.

The most important reason to carry condition 1 is because when you need your gun you'll probably need it RIGHT NOW. Do you want to have to take the time to rack the slide before it becomes useful. One advantage to concealed carry is that the person that's threatening you probably doesn't realize that you have a gun on you. You'll be lucky to get the oppurtunity to get to your gun in the first place, let alone get it and then have time to rack the slide. Also, if for some reason you only have one hand free then it'll be that much more difficult to get the gun into action. Modern handguns are designed to be carried condition 1.

G27 and no way in hell I would ever carry unless it was cocked and locked.

Glocks have 3 integral safeties they can not go boom unless you pull the trigger.

I'll add my .02 to make that .04, but mine is a Glock 26.

I carry my 1911 (M1991) in C1 and have not had any problems or worries.

I carry a SIG most of the time. (condition 1)
No external safeties to fumble with, all internal.
No worries.

I've read different things about this and a good portion of the issue is how you train and how much. If you train yourself to disengage a safety as you draw that's one thing, if you train yourself to disengage the safety (manual external) and say, cock a hammer, then that's another. Training yourself to draw the weapon and rack the slide in a consistent and muscle memory developing way can easily mitigate some of the concern about speed and weapon readiness. On the other hand (pun intended) the point was made that you may not have both hands free to execute the actions needed to chamber a round.

The weapon and your comfort level with it is the most important thing. I've not read a lot about Glocks and/or Locked and Cocked 1911's having numerous issues with AD. But for god sakes, it’s a weapon, all weapons are dangerous. They are indiscriminant and have no compunction against putting the bullet in you over the other guy. Safety and more importantly, safe handling are critical at ALL TIMES!

Taking the time to drill your draw from different positions and in different settings is critical. Having the weapon on your hip and not training or drilling yourself to gain muscle memory is negligent and dangerous. Learning how your weapon can and will snag on a jacket or shirt or sweater, how you will access the weapon with your weak side hand and other such basic things can be the difference between life, death or self harm.

I think that if you are comfortable with your weapon in a loaded configuration and are confident in your practice and ability, then by all means carry it that way. If not and that's your desire (meaning carrying cocked and loaded), then perhaps the issue is your confidence in your ability and or the weapon. I personally do not store my weapons with a round in the chamber, but I do carry all of them loaded, even during practice. I abide by the “A gun is always loaded” rule and treat them all accordingly.

I've been having very similar conversations with novice shooters a lot this year and my advice stands... Practice Practice Practice and then do it all over again. Shoot your weapon, do live fire drills, shoot as often as you can and do it with purpose! While just standing in a single position is great for gaining basic confidence in your weapon and basic skills

I feel that if you are shooting under 500rnds a month with your Carry Weapon, that you're absolutely not shooting it enough. Ammo and time is cheap compared to a life threatening mistake when and if the time comes to draw and use your carry weapon!

I carry a DAO Beretta 8040 no external safeties.
I like a gun that is DA/SA and just decock it and take the safety off if it has one if its decock only even better
and just have the first round DA

you need to carry the way that you feel comfortable, I know people that wont carry with a round chambered. To me thats almost useless but its their preference, I will respect their choices.

Saying it once is great but, when you repeat yourself, you seem like you're preaching.[wink]

I at one time thought it was kinda' dangerous, but some experience and education showed me that it was my lack of understanding that was making me feel that way.

I always carry my 1911SC in condition 1. The hammer back on a loaded chamber is an excellent reminder for safe handling. :mrgreen: With the grip safety blocking the firing pin, thumb safety, and keeping the finger off the trigger, it won't go 'bang' until I say so. I also find it easier to accurately place my first shot with a cold gun from the holster when it's a 1911.

I was pretty concerned about C1 w/ my XD-40, I even posted here....
After carrying in C1 for the last 8 months w/ it and shooting IDPA matches using my IWB, I'm completely comfortable w/ all aspects. I even practice w/ my fanny pack holster. I really think that's the only way for me to be ok w/ it. I agree w/ gman, knowing it's ready to go forces me to respect it. It also takes one or more steps out of a defensive situatuon when time counts.

PS, Glad to see there is another follower on the board..... I'm jus tnot a pulpit type. :P

I am getting used to the idea of C1 carry. I am trusting the huge safety on my CZ more now days. I carried it with out a round in the chamber and, lo and behold... it did NOT 'fire' by itself!!!!! :roll:

I guess C1 carry is growing on me. I guess it amounts to trust!

My favorite carry is still my snubby, but I am getting used to the idea of C1... I will occasionally take the CZ on 'outings' as I grow more comfortable with it.
