I've spent a lot of time in a turret behind the Mk49 system and I've never witnessed this. Sustained fire in any automatic weapons system, overtime, can be detrimental to the internals but the mini is a stout weapon. I've ran the barrels until they were glowing before and never had an issue. I believe a/the barrel(s) will go before anything else and I think this is what our Crane trainers have said as well.Quote:

I thought only the Titanium M134's fired at 4000 rounds per minute, and the normal ones fired at 3000.
And since when did Dillon stop the mini gun program? I thought they were the premier manufacturer of these.
I may have this wrong but I believe Crane, contracted to SOCOM started supporting the Mini-gun systems as they already supported a multitude of special operations weapons systems. That may just be for the Army. I was still ordering parts from Dillon in May to include dummy rounds, the 500rd. cans and non-swing arm mounts for the 240s, as well as their 240 cradles. Anything mini-gun related got cancelled. We had to go through Crane for it.
Our two systems down range had titanium cores according to our Crane dudes that came out every once in a while to make sure we weren't creating extra work for them. Haha. I was always under the impression that the fire rate was controlled via the GCU and Gun Drive Motor as well. I know there is a shit-ton of different variants of these things floating around out there. We had barrel braces for the aircraft set-up we couldn't use as well as some other odds and ends from different set-ups.
I could be wrong. I was just a proficient user of the system, not one well-informed on the history or the different set-ups. Most everything technical I learned from our Crane reps.

I've always wondered what would've happened it the military had embraced and perfected mini gun technology earlier--say during WWII. I mean the gatlin gun had been around since the end of the Civil War. Imagine a half dozen of these on each US ship off or Okinawa.
