Question about buying and selling and a BOS

I am starting a new thread because I didn't want to trash this guys sale thread.

He says selling for a friend and his friend wants:

"FTF COS area, he has requested a BOS with DL #, name, and address signed by the buying."

My question is just to make it a little easier for this person I do not know to steal my identity shouldn't I also provide my SS# and while I and paying $1000 in CASH so he knows now that I have money and valuables and my ADDRESS!

Maybe I just can give him the actual credit cards when he comes to my house?

I don't have a problem showing my CCW to allow the seller to comply with state law, but I don't think there is a gun deal good enough for me to do this unless the seller is doing the same and showing me they are bonded and insured to at least 4 million in case they mishandle my private information and I end up damaged as a result.

Anyone else worry about just handing out copies of such personal information?

This thread along with the other two a week that come up on this same subject all end the same. Its up to the seller to make the rules on his ad. If you dont like it move one. Simple as that, no need to start ANOTHER thread about how you dont agree with a BOS.

Seller sets the rules on his ad, end of story

OP,

Under your USER CP, go to 'Trading Post' option and click the 'Ignore All Bill of Sale' option. That way you won't waste your time on the BOS required posts.

I get that the BOS thing has been done to death, I did a search for "identity theft" on this site and get nothing. I get if the buyer wants a bill of sale it is his choice to thin the herd of buyers. I was trying to explore the danger of some one data mining by selling a gun and emptying a bank account at the same time.

Anyway doesn't bother me because I am in the pass on those sales camp also, I just thought it was interested by the detail of private info being asked for, again sorry to unwittingly beat a dead horse. [Beer]

Too much work to steal identity, and then they know who you are and what you look like. Not to mention that anyone who agrees to a BOS, but doesn't take a copy of their own is retarded.

I don't mind BOS for cars, because it proves I bought it to my insurance company if I wreck it on the way home from the sale. DMV likes them too.

I still do them so if I/the buyer gets pulled over on the way home with no registration, it proves that they just bought the vehicle and the cop usually lets them go (and in my experience, gives you a card to call them in case you get pulled over again on the way home). BOS's are NOT required by the DMV though.

Sold a beater car in the spring. I was out of town so mistake #1 was letting the buyers go off with the current plates, hind sight 20/20. Well fast forward to a couple weeks ago, get a notice saying the vehicle was towed to such and such location for being in one spot to long or whatever. There was parking violation and a bill for close to $500. Called the company for the vehicle and apparently the purchaser didnt plate the vehicle and using my plates. The BOS saved my ass on the fine and all that jazz since it was going to court or whatever. Tow company, Police (since they wrote the sitation) and DMV said thanks to the BOS for the vehicle, I am not liable for anything that has incured since last spring.

Not required by the DMV for registration though, which is what I was getting at.
And yeah... never leave your plates on the vehicle. People are idiots.

that was what i was thinking . me personally i wont have anything to do with third party gun sales . a bos does not matter if the seller (third party ) is not present . anything concerning firearms should not have a third party involved , thats how people get into trouble . ftf, co resident , and if the words "for a friend " come up no deal . my thing is there are plenty of free sites so they could join and sell their own gun .

If i actually wanted to do a BOS i would insist the seller give me the same info they require from me.
With that being said why would i want to give someone any personal info of mine, when i could go to a dealer do a 4473 and purchase a gun over the counter. For what i see here and other web sites i can buy new with tax for less than asking price on some of the guns listed 4 sale.

FWIW. COLO law does not require any info to be exchanged or shown on a private sale. There is no law other than for piece of mind verifying they are a resident of the state. It is a PRIVATE SALE.

This will probably increase as a side effect of the 30-day probation and min. post count rules...
I'm not saying the new rules are a problem, I'm just a realist about what effect they have.

as far as the BOS requirement, it's been covered before- if his requirements to sell are too much, then it won't sell... if you're worried as a seller, perhaps you're better off taking it to a pawnshop or local gun store to sell. Or put it on gunbroker.

I agree with Jim. I don't mind a BOS but the sleer has to be willing to give me a copy of his info as well. You want my DL#? No problem. I will need a copy of yours as well. If they are willing to give their info they are probably on the up and up.

I can understand the identity theft angle but what are the odds? You have to meet the seller FTF. So much for anonymity. Do any buyers write down licence plate #s? Anyone else ask to peek at a DL to prove residency?

I don't have a problem with people posting for a friend. I have posted vehicles and contact info on boards for friends that are not into the internet thing. The new min post count might make that a little more common.

Although not required they do serve a good purpose for tax purposes. Especially if the car is cheaper than Estimated. Least that's how they did me.

Apparently though the post office will sell your address to companies, and if you own your house its public record. DL # is a no go for me.

I'd prefer to show CCW to show i'm a good guy.

Recent transaction for me:

I have the seller's cell number and first name, offered to show my CHP. He has my cell number and first name. Money and merchandise changed hands, I showed my CHP, he glanced at it for all of 2 seconds, we shook hands, bs'ed about bikes for a few minutes, and parted ways. Everyone is covered, nobody's ID is at risk. How it should go every time, IMHO.

Sounds semi fishy. I've signed a bos or two for stuff I bought before that was a great deal. Doesn't matter now after my boating accident.

Instead of giving him all your information, have him meet you at a Gun Shop or FFL and have him pay them for a transfer/ BG check. Then you are covered too, in case the firearm is stolen. See how he likes it when the table is turned on him to provide information for the dealer to do a transfer.
