Its been cold in the foothills lately, down into the 20's. Think its safe yet to hunt some rabbit? I wanna go up and give them hell.

I was told the same thing another member said his dad told him... only go for rabbits in months that end in R.
It is October.
Though I've eaten rabbits in the summer months and nothing bad came of it.
One reason to wait till its gotten below zero is the rabbits carry lice. After the first couple of freezes the lice die off.
I'm waiting til nov but that's just cause that's when we go. I say get one and inspect it with gloves. The lice are not hard to spot if there alive. Good luck.
Im at 8500', and other than a week or 2 ago, it hasnt been very cold. Id wait until it gets the next cold front comes in, and when it does, it will stay colder for the next several months! That front should be due right about Halloween.
awesome. Thanks for the info everyone!

where are you going to shoot them?
Not sure but Yosemite might know.
I picked up seven in a couple hours near Buena Vista. No Bugs and seems to be the peak in the Bunny cycle. They were everywhere, only covered about two acres and seen lots more.

Hunting near timberline and they live in the conifer and pine trees. Start at sun up and usually done by 10am. They are nocturnal early and late hours hunting.
They live in the trees?
Yea you ought ta see em jump from tree to tree!
The dig under the old dead trees for dens and for better wording
Below the trees on the ground. as they say " live in dark timber" They dont live in the thickets or grassy knoll. Wiki might help those who need habitat info.y
We picked off two in cokedale from off my friends back patio.
so here is a question. The land I am hunting tomorrow is 1000 acres or so. Tons of fence rows and lots of cover.
Would you hesitate to eat a rabbit if it was on the same 1000 acre plot as some prairie dogs?
What about cows?
The land has some old farm equipment and an old house that the rabbits seem to love to hang out around. Would you have any qualms about eating a rabbit from the same parcel?
