Its legit.
Its also not as big of a deal as people are making it out to be.
I would call it a big deal.
Where's the constitutional authority to turn off means of communication?
It would be too easy for the federal government to, if it thought it needed to, send information to state governments and let them disseminate the information in the way they see fit. Stay constitutional, embrace federalism. Any breach is a big deal, IMO.
I agree with Mcanter on this one....
haven't they basically be able to do this since 1963?
so what's new?
I still disagree with it. Just because they've had the ability doesn't mean they should continue to have it or make it a good idea.
I agree with some of the post in the link.
If it were a test it would happen in the middle of the night, or very early in the morning to not disrupt broadcasting.
They chose to put in the middle of the day to make a point. Control.... and the evening news to cover it.
I would agree, no need to do it during the middle of the day unless trying to make a point.
Disconcerting to say the least.
Anybody else notice that the one who occupies the highest seat in the nation is projecting himself much more aggresively in his speaking and campaigning-err "Drumming up support for his jobs bill"?
agree... someone is flexing.
Better hope Congress don't ever grant the executive branch the internet power switch as proposed. I can careless w/ TV/cable.. I listen to AM in the car and read news online.
I agree with you. I can see the usefulness of a system like that prior to the Internet becoming so commonplace and especially during the Cold War, but not so much anymore.
However, testing/demonstrating/making a point with it isn't a huge deal. Its nothing new, the system has been in place since 1994 (1963 if you count the EBS) and I've never heard a single thing about anybody disagreeing or challenging its legality. The test will last for something like 3 min, its not like they're shutting broadcasts down for a day or even an hour.
They should do it during all those reality shows imo...
We get 3 minutes respite from all the lies...
Well, who communicates with radio and television? No one.
Radio broadcast (over-the-air television and radio) has been managed by the FCC at the federal level for a long time, because these signals often cross state borders.
If they'd gotten this system in place before 2008, the conspiracy theory threads like this would have been on left leaning forums instead of right leaning forums such as this.
If you're worried about the government taking away your ability to communicate, I suggest strongly you go for a HAM radio license and start meeting up with your neighbors about setting up an adhoc network in your area in case of emergency.
H.
It would be my guess that the HAM operators will be pretty active that day-
Lil over reaction over this. I think if one did a little research, in order for tv and radio stations(commercial stations) to maintain their license, they have to broadcast public service messages, and emergency alerts. Is anyone old enough to remember during the cold war era, the emergency broadcast system? Its the same thing. They are doing a practice exercise, so that when 9/11 happens again, they know the system works. How many times have you all heard the EAS do a test during the day on the radio? I dont trust the govt, and even I am not raising an eye brow over this. As for hams, you may want to do a lil history on that. Check WWII, and what hams had to do during the way.
I don't know about you guys, but I'm less concerned about the Radio/TV as I am about November 5th! "Remember, remember the fifth of November." If people try to do some V for Vendetta stuff I'm making sure I don't leave the house unarmed.
I'm not as worried about this as I am about VZW and other carriers agreeing to allow the government to send "emergency" alerts directly to cell phones. I can opt out of all of them except for the ones coming from the president.
Who really listens to the radio anymore? Between podcasts and music I actually want to listen to, my ipod is ALWAYS on in the car. At home, the tv is only on for movies and the occasional football game. We have a family of 5 and try to practice the art of conversation with our kids while we are at home.
If they wanted to get a real emergency message to me, they would have to send it to my cellphone. Or turn on my tv so I could see the message.
Either way in the end, they have control over all media that is outside your own personal network and will take control of what they want, when they want. I just hope they know the consequences for that action.
That said, this specifically seems to me to be nothing different than the EBS of old.
