Dynamic Handgun 1

• August 24 - 26, 2012 (3 Day – Friday to Sunday)

Cost

• $650 – 3 day course ($25 discount for previous Magpul Dynamics students, please indicate the previous course you have taken on your application)
• $60 – range fee due on the first day of the course
• Lunch will be available for an additional fee
• Students provide their own ammo (2,000 rounds – ammo can be purchased or shipped through the range, more details once you have registered)
• Class size limited to 20 students

Description
This course is entry-level and is designed to give the beginner or novice shooter the proper handgun fundamentals. Starting with combat mindset, the class covers:

• Proper gear selection and placement
• Shooting stance
• The draw
• Proper grip
• Axis and mechanics of recoil
• Grip, sight alignment, sight picture
• Trigger control
• Speed reloads
• Tactical reloads
• The four (4) primary malfunctions
• Strong and weak hand shooting
• Shooting on the move
• Situation specific shooting positions

Hardware/Kit
A functional and practical handgun chambered in 9mm, .40 cal, or .45 ACP. If available, a spare weapon system is also an excellent idea. A cleaning kit and tools that are compatible with the weapon system(s) in question is also a must. Each student should have a minimum of 5 working magazines. Sometimes magazines will make it in your dump bag and sometimes they won't. If they hit the ground they can become fouled, causing weapon malfunctions and time off the line.

• Students provide their own ammo (2,000 rounds)
• Note pad, and pen/pencil
• Clothing suited to strenuous type activity as well as being seasonally appropriate
• Appropriate foot wear
• Rain gear / cold weather gear (seasonal)
• Ear pro (electronic preferred)
• Eye pro, which wraps around
• Clear lenses for night shoots
• Baseball style hat recommended
• A holster and magazine pouch that will retain equipment when moving
• Secondary weapon mounted or handheld light
• Spare bulbs and batteries
• Tools that work on your weapon
• Weapons lube
• Water hydrating device
• Knee and elbow pads (optional)
• Gloves (optional)
• Insect Repellent (optional)
• An open mind

Pricey any one going?

Don't have the money for that, plus the cost of 2k rounds. Sounds like a lot of fun and would learn a lot by running and gunning. Maybe one day I will be able to do something like this. If anyone has some land and has prior training and would like to teach a few guys let me know, sorry off topic at the end.

Is it odd to feel strange about taking a class from an instructor that was in the same class as you the first time they took that class?

I wouldn't feel strange about it. A lot of places, across industries, make instructors take the class they are supposed to teach when that person is new to the organization.

Same sentiment, one day it'd be nice to be able to afford this stuff. Sounds like some fun. There is always more to learn.

Here are my thoughts on this, which generally aren't worth crap.

As an instructor new to a new school/company, I would think as part of the on-boarding process, it would make sense for the new instructor to attend as a student to audit the course, understand the curriculum, etc.

As an existing instructor, continuous training and improvement should be something that is pursued, and I value instructors that do this. There's always something to learn. In one of the past Magpul courses I took, there was an instructor from another school attending.

About a month until the class and registration is almost full, just a few spots open, register soon.

FWIW, I took this class down in Texas a few months ago. Steve Fisher (new lead instructor) can flat teach. He was in the unenviable position of teaching a basic class that had a collection of pretty hard shooters in it.

I know myself and the guys I was down there hanging out with started stealing teaching methodologies about 10 min into the class and didn't stop until the cars were loaded and we were on our way home.

I think the class is over priced by about $200 to be competitive, but anyone who attends will not be disappointed with Steve's instruction.

And just FYI, average round count in TX was between 1200 and 1300 rounds. No one got anywhere near 2k.

Class is a little over 2 weeks and we have only 2 spots open. Ping me if anyone has any questions. We're gonna have some fun in the sand and sun!

I'll check, but I'm pretty sure there won't be any last minute deals. With just 1 or 2 spots left, and since they're HQ'd in Colorado, they might offer these to their employees. I've runs some classes with them in the past where employees have attended.

For those registered and attending:

• Class starts at 8 a.m. Please be on time and allow enough time to get to the range. When you drive into the range on Friday, meet at the clubhouse.

This year apparently Magpul and Steve have revised the curriculum to focus more on fundamentals and less on more advanced techniques. Compared to my previous class, the focus of this class was much more on pure accuracy, and not "acceptable accuracy" or "combat accuracy". For every single drill, the only acceptable hits were to the 8" circles on the targets or to the brain triangle between the tip of the nose and the eyebrows. You shoot until you get your hits.

Every day (even the first) started & ended with 10 shots to an 8" bullseye at 25m with no time limit. Everyone in the class was a LOT better on day 3 than on day 1.

There was no rolling around in the dirt, urban prone, etc. On day 3 we did do some shooting and moving, but it was all standing up, and intended to be more informational on how your accuracy is hurt by movement.

We did hundreds of rounds worth of malfunction clearance drills which works the hands pretty hard, but is a great skill to practice. The technique taught for this was different than my previous class, much simpler. The drill setup is a lot less artificial, with every one of us having to clear real, hard malfunctions under simulated pressure.

The day 2 walk-back competition was fun, with three of us hitting the steel plate at 125m, and one of us hit the plate at 150m. They did a good job mixing in a few speed & accuracy competition drills throughout the class for a little friendly competition, with magpul gear as the prizes. An ACS stock was awarded for one of them, a hat for another.

2 instructors for the class, and most of the time we were divided into two relays so that it was 10 shooters on the line with 2 instructors. This gave a lot of individual attention for people with questions or who needed help with a technique or a drill.

Round count (for me) was about 1200, but it would vary based on the loadout you bring to the line. Most of the time I was loaded with 4 spare mags. For people who had fewer mags on them for each drill, their round count was probably closer to 1000.

All in all, highly recommended for a level-1 handgun class. Wasn't what you see in the DVDs from a few years ago, but it definitely improved my shooting quite a bit. I will definitely attend another one.

While fun, i always did find this stuff as not that useful, maybe its just me.. That being said, it was fun to shoot thru, under, and around travis' truck [UZI][ROFL2]
