so ive decided to builld my first precision rifle. this wont be my first rifle as i have experience with the army's m24 from a few years back. i would like to build a similar rifle maybe with different chassis, but i for sure want a rem 700 action in 308 and heavy contour barrel. so my question would be where can i find inexpensive parts for this project. I definitely don't want to break the bank. this is only gonna be a target as rifle i dont hunt anymore. [Sniper]
I would just buy a Remington 5-R. The rifle will shoot better than most people can, and it'll probably be cheaper than buying all the parts and paying a smith to build it for you.
If you like the M24, then the 5R will be perfect for you. Seriously, if your going to build something on a 700 action you may as well just buy a 5R and be happy.

I'm a little biased but the 700 AAC-SD is also a great option. It's cheaper then the 5r too, which gives room for a good trigger and a good stock. Not a bad shooter outta the box either, a different stock is a huge improvement though on these guns.
Ask yourself if are you going to benefit from a 5R or will the PSS/SPS series suffice?
Either will outshoot the operator most of the time and the PSS/SPS are going to be easier and cheaper to find. Gives you more moolah to sink into upgrades that suit your style.
What budget constraints do You have ? This makes all the difference as to what to recommend .

There isn't any difference between the barreled actions on the SPS and the PSS rifles the difference is in the stocks . The SPS guns are usually 1MOA or better rifles in a good stock and trigger . Plan on spending more money on glass than the gun .

When you get it we can check the bolt lugs for true as well as the crown of the muzzle.
Those few little tweaks probably have a greater impact then a trued action. Most folks go with an upper tier barrel when they get the action trued and that is where the biggest improvement is seen.
So iwas looking earlier & found a sps varmint 308 26 in heavy barrel i think it was $579 @ gander mtn. Thats probably gonna be the starting point. what do you guys think of the macmillan A5 Stock.?Quote:

The McMillan stocks are quality stuff . I have guns in an A1 , A2 , And A5 . The stocks aren't drop in and will need bedded .
Stocks are a personal feel kind of thing and its probably best to try some out before you pick one because of the expense , The chassis system stocks all run in the 1k$ range and a A5 with no options is going to be 5 - 600 ish IIRC . There are other stock options out there that are available and deals on used stuff can be found pretty easily over on Snipers Hide .
The last stock SPS I dealt with was a buddy's gun and he put a good trigger on it and dropped it in an AICS chassis and it was a 1/2 - 3/4 MOA gun with handloads with no work to the barreled action .
The local precision rifle matches at PWSA and CRC are a good place to take a look at different stuff and talk to people about what works for them , there are threads on here about both matches in the competition section .
